The Royal Hobart Hospital is the tertiary referral hospital for Tasmania, and the principal teaching hospital for the University of Tasmania Medical School. The Hospital provides most specialist medical services for the region or state.

In addition to the annual recruitment campaign, the Department of Critical Care Medicine (DCCM) at the Royal Hobart Hospital has vacancies to commence from August 2025 for a period of six months –

* Fellow/Senior Registrar (a senior role, see position description below)
* ICU Registrar/Trainee (with potential for extended employment for suitable applicants)

Salary

$134,930 - $189,005 per annum

Salary range is in accordance with Medical Practitioners Agreement 2022

Period of Employment

Fixed term, full time day work, working 76 hours per fortnight plus 10 hours protected training time (pro rata), commencing 2 February 2026 until 1 February 2027.

There may be opportunity to start earlier than February if circumstances permit.

Note: 24 months negotiable for suitable applicants.

ICU Registrars and other JMOs may be required to work up to 3 months per year at our satellite unit at Calvary Hospital. This unit is accredited by CICM and provides tertiary-level cardiothoracic and neurosurgery support.

Applicants should note that, for a period of twelve months from the date of publication, this selection process may be used to fill subsequent or similar full time, part time and casual vacancies.

Calvary Hospital, Lenah Valley

ICU Registrars and other JMOs may be required to work up to 3 months per year at our satellite intensive care unit at Calvary Hospital. This ICU is accredited by CICM and provides tertiary-level cardiothoracic, neurosurgical and other major surgical support. There is a combined roster across the two units.

Essential Requirements:

Registration/licences that are essential requirements of this role must remain current and valid at all times whilst employed in this role and the status of these may be checked at any time during employment. It is the employee’s responsibility to ensure that registration/licences remain current and to advise the Employer if their circumstances change. This includes notifying the Employer of any new criminal convictions and/or if a registration/licence is revoked, cancelled or has its conditions altered.

* General or limited registration with the Medical Board of Australia.
* Current Working with Children Registration (where applicable and as determined by individual position requirements).

The Head of the State Service has determined that the person nominated for this job is to satisfy a pre‑employment check before taking up the appointment, on promotion or transfer. The following checks are to be conducted:

1. Conviction checks in the following areas:

a) Crimes of Violence

b) Sex Related Offences

c) Serious Drug Offences

d) Crimes involving dishonesty

2. Identification check

3. Disciplinary action in previous employment check.


Selection Process :

Candidates will be shortlisted for interview based on the following desirable criteria:

Desirable Criteria – ICU Registrars

* Previous clinical experience in Intensive Care Medicine, Anaesthesia, and/or Emergency Medicine, including competence in relevant procedural skills
* Successful completion of practical acute care and resuscitation courses, such as ALS, BASIC, APLS, EMST and formal Point of Care Ultrasound training.
* Accredited Trainees with CICM, ANZCA, ACEM and/or ACRRM
* Demonstrated experience in audit, research, teaching, and safety and quality.
* Demonstrated experience in leadership roles either within or outside of work.

Desirable Criteria – ICU Senior Registrars & CICM TY Fellows

* A minimum of three years relevant clinical experience including at least 24 months recent experience in Intensive Care Medicine
* Completion of CICM Primary Examination
* Completed or near completion of final examinations for Fellowship of the College of Intensive Care Medicine, or equivalent
* Applicants who have completed Fellowship in another acute care specialty, with suitable Intensive Care experience, or dual trainees in Intensive Care, may be considered for Senior Registrar posts.
* CICM Trainees who fulfill College requirements for CICM Transitional Fellow, should contact us directly prior to applying.

Nb: Our Senior Registrar positions include ‘first on-call’ after hours from home with Consultant support. It is a very senior role, similar to TY Fellows. It requires significant tertiary intensive care experience and independent, high level resuscitation, team leadership and communication skills.
