About the Hospital
The Royal Women's Hospital is one of Australia's oldest and most distinguished tertiary hospitals dedicated to improving the health and wellbeing of women and newborns. It offers specialised maternity, neonatal and women's health services.
About the Team
The Women's is a tertiary level maternal and neonatal referral hospital, with about 7000 births per year. It is also the major referral and delivery centre in Victoria for infants with fetal anomalies. The Neonatal Intensive Care Unit admits over 1500 patients per year, many less than 28 weeks and/or under 1000 gm. The Department of Neonatal Services has a capacity of 62 infants and is one of the largest in the Southern Hemisphere. It employs 15 Consultant Neonatologists, 12 full‐time equivalent Neonatal Clinical Fellows, 20 Neonatal NMOs and 3 Advanced Neonatal Nurse Practitioners. The unit is a major teaching hospital affiliated with the University of Melbourne and the Murdoch Children's Research Institute.
About the Role
NMOs are an essential member of our multidisciplinary care team and are responsible for the day‐to‐day care of neonates and their families, under the close supervision of a fellow and consultant.
NMOs are rostered to provide medical care to infants in the NICU, special care nursery, postnatal wards and the emergency department. They attend high‐risk deliveries where resuscitation is anticipated and respond to neonatal emergencies. Twice daily ward rounds occur in NICU and daily rounds in special care; NMO responsibilities include presenting on these rounds and maintaining electronic medical records. NMOs regularly discuss and closely consult provisional diagnoses and treatment plans with supervising clinicians.
They comply with hospital policies and procedures, including Occupational Health and Safety, Infection Control, Equal Employment Opportunity and Confidentiality. Practical procedures supervised and taught during orientation include neonatal resuscitation, endotracheal intubation, peripheral and central venous access (umbilical venous and arterial cannulation), ultrasound‐guided bladder taps and lumbar punctures. Simulation sessions teach communication, team‐working, neonatal resuscitation and crisis resource management.
