UQ Biological Resources

Join our casual pool for a range of associate animal technician opportunities. Based at our Gatton Campus with a competitive hourly rate of $42.93, plus 11.5% superannuation.

These casual roles are located at the Gatton Campus and may require some work outside of normal hours, including participation on the weekend/public holiday roster.


About This Opportunity

We are seeking reliable and committed Associate Animal Technicians to join our casual pool, providing essential care and husbandry for research animals at the Queensland Animal Science Precinct (QASP). This role ensures the welfare of animals while supporting general facility operations, including the use of equipment, chemicals, and other materials. You will contribute to maintenance tasks and the daily functionality of the QASP, working under routine or general supervision.


Duties and Responsibilities

Animal Husbandry

* Provide care and welfare for livestock, ensuring clean housing and maintaining biosecurity.
* Perform record-keeping and assist with research sampling and euthanasia as needed.

Operational Support

* Prepare facilities, operate machinery, and ensure compliance with safety and regulatory standards.
* Support daily operations, including waste management and effective team communication.

Research Support

* Assist in research projects by performing routine procedures and providing experimental support.
* Participate in rosters, including weekend/public holiday duties, as required.

About You

Essential:
* Certificate III in Agriculture (or equivalent) and relevant work experience.
* Possession of a C Class Licence and at least 2 years' experience in livestock handling and animal husbandry.
* Competence in livestock techniques (e.g., SC/IM injections, blood collection).
* Experience operating plant and machinery (e.g., tractors, forklifts) and capacity to obtain required licences/permits.
* Strong attention to detail, ability to work independently, and excellent team collaboration and communication skills.
Desirable:
* Knowledge of OH&S, OGTR, DAWE regulatory requirements, and animal welfare codes.
* Experience in a research environment, meat processing, and use of power/hand tools.

The successful candidate may be required to complete a number of pre-employment checks, including right to work in Australia and medical clearance.

You must maintain unrestricted work rights in Australia for the duration of this appointment to apply. Employer sponsored work rights are not available for this appointment.


Medical Clearance and Vaccinations

Medical Clearance: Working with laboratory animals is an inherent requirement of the position. The appointment is therefore subject to, and conditional upon, satisfactory medical clearance(s), including disclosure of relevant medical history, to undertake such work without unreasonable risk to health and safety. Ongoing health monitoring and control measures apply.

Vaccinations and Immunisation: It is a condition of employment that if you are required now or in the future to work in clinical facilities or roles with exposure to vaccine-preventable diseases, you are immunised and will provide evidence of immunisation in accordance with the University's guidelines.
