Chief Paediatric & Perinatal Pathologist

The Royal Melbourne Hospital is one of Australia's leading public healthcare providers. We are looking for a passionate and dedicated individual to join us and build a career.


The Opportunity

Join a newly established Medical Director – Chief Paediatric and Perinatal Pathologist role within a forming public pathology network in Victoria's Parkville Precinct, led by RMH. The role will integrate pathology services across four leading health services: The Royal Children's Hospital, The Royal Melbourne Hospital, and The Royal Women's Hospital.

This senior clinical leadership appointment is a 0.4 FTE position based at the Royal Children's Hospital (RCH), with the option to combine it with a 0.6 FTE complementary clinical appointment or an honorary research appointment.


About You

You will work in equal partnership with the Chief Pathologist to provide clinical governance and shape the strategic direction, standards, and culture of the Network. You will define and uphold clinical standards for paediatrics and perinatal pathology, ensuring alignment across all partnering hospitals.

As a senior strategic leader with strong clinical expertise, you will unify laboratories to the new network model, engage diverse stakeholders, and support academic and translational research engagement across the Parkville Precinct.


Key Accountabilities

* Provide clinical leadership and strategic direction for paediatric and perinatal pathology services across the network.
* Co‑lead the clinical governance framework with the Chief Pathologist.
* Ensure services are consistent with the RCH, RWH clinical governance framework and paediatric/perinatal care standards.
* Champion a strong, inclusive, and collaborative professional culture across the network.
* Support integration of pathology services with clinical programmes.
* Build strong relationships across Parkville health services.
* Strengthen paediatric‑specific research collaborations with partners such as the Murdoch Children's Research Institute (MCRI).
* Act as a senior clinical lead for the Network as required.


Essential Qualifications, Registrations & Other Requirements

* Registration as a medical specialist in pathology with FRCPA and must hold, or be eligible for, registration with the Medical Board of Australia.
* Proven senior strategic leadership and change management skills.
* Demonstrated leadership experience in a complex pathology setting.
* Ability to collaborate with paediatric subspecialists, neonatologists, and maternal‑fetal medicine teams to achieve excellence in outcomes.
* Track record of excellence in clinical service delivery in pathology with a commitment to continuous improvement and teamwork.
* Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
* Knowledge and understanding of public health and pathology policy issues, evidence‑based practice, and health‑care safety and quality.


Additional Selection Criteria (Honorary UoM Appointment Only)

* PhD or equivalent research higher degree.
* Demonstrated sustained success in obtaining research grants and external research income (with emphasis on competitive, international, and peer‑reviewed).
* Fellowship of the Royal Australasian College of Physicians (FRACP) with paediatric subspecialty training (focus on paediatric and perinatal medicine/pathology).
* A research track record and relevant tertiary qualification in Management, Business, Administration or equivalent (desirable but not essential).
