LABORATORY SCIENTIST (ENTRY LEVEL)

JOB DESCRIPTION & HOW TO APPLY

Nanollose is an ASX-listed biomaterials company at the forefront of developing microbial cellulose technologies for sustainable applications within the

industries. We're seeking an enthusiastic early-career scientist to join our R&D team and contribute to our core projects.

You'll be joining a small, agile team working across a suite of innovative, microbial cellulose-based products. Your primary focus will be fermentation and processing of microbial cellulose feedstocks for our flagship product, Nullarbor lyocell fibre. You will also support R&D activities for our biobased leather alternative.

This is an excellent opportunity for a recent graduate looking to apply their laboratory skills in a commercial R&D environment and grow their expertise in biotechnology and sustainable materials.

ESSENTIAL QUALIFICATIONS

· BSc (Hons) in Biomaterials, Microbiology, Polymer Science, Material Science, Organic Chemistry, or related discipline.

· Demonstrated laboratory competence through Honours research project or equivalent practical training.

TECHNICAL SKILLS & EXPERIENCE

Essential

1. Foundational understanding of biomaterials, chemistry, and microbiology principles.

2. Competency in standard laboratory practices, including accurate record-keeping and adherence to safety protocols.

3. Proficiency with basic analytical and characterisation techniques (e.g. spectroscopy, mechanical testing).

4. Ability to follow and execute experimental protocols with attention to detail.

Desirable

1. Familiarity with fermentation processes or microbial culture techniques.

2. Familiarity with biopolymers, biomaterials, or cellulose-based materials.

3. Awareness of circular economy principles and sustainable materials.

SOFT SKILLS & ATTRIBUTES

1. Keen attention to detail and methodical approach to laboratory work.

2. Eagerness to learn and develop new technical skills.

3. Ability to communicate findings clearly in written and verbal form.

4. Adaptable attitude with willingness to take on a variety of lab and support tasks.

5. Reliable, self-motivated, and able to work both independently and as part of a team.

WHAT YOU'LL DO

1. Perform fermentation to produce microbial cellulose feedstocks.

2. Assist with optimisation of fermentation parameters (e.g. media composition, culture conditions).

3. Support R&D activities for microbial cellulose leather, including research, preparation of composites and coatings.

4. Chemical processing of microbial cellulose.

5. Conduct routine materials characterisation and analysis under supervision.

6. Maintain accurate laboratory records and contribute to data analysis and reporting.

7. Plan and execute experimental work, including conduction hazard assessment.

8. Assist with inventory management of consumables and general laboratory upkeep.

9. Support shipping and logistics of test materials and pilot batches.

10. Comply with regulatory and safety requirements.
