Offer description

About Austal Austal is Australia’s global shipbuilder, Defence prime contractor and maritime technology partner of choice, designing, constructing, and supporting defence and commercial vessels for the world’s leading operators. The company operates in Australia, the USA, Philippines, and Vietnam.

Austal is delivering multiple naval shipbuilding and sustainment programs for the Royal Australian Navy, Australian Border Force, and the Department of Defence, employing approximately 1,000 people in facilities located Western Australia, Queensland, and the Northern Territory.

Austal has entered into a landmark Strategic Shipbuilding Agreement (SSA) with the Commonwealth of Australia, launching a new era of continuous naval shipbuilding within the Henderson Defence Precinct and across Western Australia. As Australia’s Strategic Shipbuilder, Austal will start by delivering eighteen Landing Craft Medium and eight Landing Craft Heavy vessels for the Australian Army.

The SSA will drive significant growth across our industry and workforce, as we deliver existing and future programs under a long‑term partnership. Through effective collaboration with our supply chain partners, Austal is driving innovation, developing sovereign capability, and creating lasting opportunities for Australian industry and workers.

To support this growth, we are building a highly skilled team to engage with local industry and supply chains, and contribute to complex, large‑scale projects that reflect Austal’s proven capabilities and trusted performance.

About The Opportunity The Reliability Engineer supports the Integrated Logistic Support (ILS) Program by conducting RAM (Reliability, Availability, Maintainability) analysis and developing artefacts for maritime mission and support systems. Using model‑based systems engineering (MBSE) tools, the role informs system safety, maintenance, and supply support aspects of the ILS Program. It provides RAM expertise to subprograms, collaborates with design engineers and ILS practitioners, and ensures RAM analysis guides engineering decisions to achieve supportability by design. The position operates under the supervision of, and is accountable to, an ILS Lead or Senior RAM Engineer.

What’s Involved

RAM Modelling and Analysis: Develop models and assessments using industry‑standard methods to guide design and support decisions

Data Validation: Collect and validate operational and engineering data to support RAM assessments and continuous improvement

Design Collaboration: Integrate RAM requirements into system design to enhance reliability, availability, and maintainability outcomes

ILS Integration: Align RAM activities with other ILS subprograms to support cohesive lifecycle support strategies

Stakeholder Engagement: Communicate effectively with design engineers, maintenance engineering, and supply support practitioners to ensure RAM considerations are applied

Compliance and Standards: Ensure RAM outputs meet Defence standards, Integrated Product Support policy, and contractual requirements

Continuous Improvement: Use RAM insights to refine engineering practices and improve system performance over time

You’ll Need Essential

Australian citizenship required; must be able to obtain a Baseline Government Security Clearance.

Bachelor’s degree in mechanical, Electrical, Systems, or related engineering discipline.

Minimum 3 years in RAM, maintenance engineering, life cycle cost modelling, or supportability analysis within Defence or complex asset environments
