Job: | Full-Time | Fixed-Term (Up-To 2 years) | Sydney, NSW (Flexible) | Up to $215,686 (Based on Experience)

This is an Aboriginal/Torres Strait Islander identified position which is a genuine occupational qualification and is authorised under section 14(d) of the Anti-Discrimination Act 1977.

The National Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Legal Services (NATSILS) is the national peak body for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Legal Services. NATSILS is auspiced by the Aboriginal Legal Service (NSW/ACT) Limited (ALS), and operates within ALS policies, governance, and systems. We advocate for justice, equality, and the rights of our peoples, supporting culturally safe legal services and driving national reforms to close the gap in justice outcomes.

Your Impact:

As a pivotal member of NATSILS, you will provide visionary, culturally informed leadership to the Chairperson, Deputy Chairperson, staff, and members, guiding excellence in governance, strategy, and operations. You will champion social justice for mob, driving initiatives that strengthen national legal advocacy and create meaningful, lasting community impact. Each day, you will:

* Drive NATSILS' strategic vision, providing leadership and expert advice on justice system reform
* Lead and manage staff, operations, governance, finances, and risk to deliver high-quality outcomes
* Negotiate, implement, and report on funding and partnership contracts, ensuring compliance with obligations
* Oversee policy, law reform, and advocacy initiatives to advance justice and equality for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities
* Lead coordination of national member networks, including the NATSILS Policy Officer Network, national meetings, and collaboration forums.
* Foster strong partnerships and collaboration with ATSILS members, communities, government, and stakeholders
* Represent NATSILS nationally and internationally, providing high-quality advice, reports, and advocacy
* Promote cultural safety, sector development, and compliance with ALS and NATSILS policies, values, and governance.
* Work in partnership with the Coalition of Peaks and Government through the Justice Policy Partnership under the National Agreement on Closing the Gap.

Your Story & Strengths:

With respect, pride, and cultural insight, you walk alongside Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities, understanding the social, historical, and systemic challenges they face. You are committed to advancing justice, supporting mob with care, and reducing cultural burden, bringing the following values, experience, and leadership strengths:

* Be a proud Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander person, recognised by your community.
* Minimum three years' experience in national/state law or policy development, or in senior leadership within an ATSILS, ACCO, or the legal assistance sector.
* Tertiary qualifications in law, justice, business, public policy, or a related field with senior-level experience.
* Deep understanding of systemic social and legal issues affecting Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities.
* Proven leadership in managing teams, projects, budgets, and operational functions with strong cultural governance.
* Expertise in building relationships, partnerships, and collaboration with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities and stakeholders.
* Strong research, policy, advocacy, and communication skills, including public speaking and media engagement.
* Experience in leading complex projects, government reporting, and sector-wide collaboration.
* Willingness to undertake interstate travel and work occasional irregular hours to meet national responsibilities.
