Department of Education Victoria – Epsom VIC

14d ago, from Department of Education & Training Victoria

Epsom Primary School, located 8 km north of Bendigo, was established in 1881 and provides high‑quality, inclusive education for students from Foundation to Grade 6.

Our school is supported by over 50 dedicated staff members including experienced educators, early‑career teachers, and Education Support staff. Our school structure includes both single‑year and composite classes, enabling flexibility in teaching and strong connections across year levels.

We are committed to fostering a safe, supportive, and engaging learning environment, where every student is empowered to Strive for Excellence, Take Pride, Act Responsibly, and Respect our Community (STAR). These values guide our approach to learning, wellbeing, and community engagement. Our vision is: "To ignite excellence and a love of learning within a community that grows together."

Since 2020, Epsom PS has implemented a systematic synthetic phonics (SSP) approach, providing a consistent and evidence‑based foundation for early literacy development. As a selected SOLAR (Systematic Oral Language and Reading) school through La Trobe University, we have further strengthened oral language and phonics instruction in the early years. This structured approach, embedded from Foundation to Year 2, has led to strong reading and writing outcomes aligned with best‑practice literacy pedagogy.

Epsom Primary School is committed to using the most up‑to‑date, evidence‑based teaching practices supported by the Department of Education. Our staff engage in ongoing professional learning to ensure students receive high‑quality, consistent teaching across all classrooms. We offer a rich curriculum supported by specialist programs in Visual Arts, Performing Arts, Physical Education, and AUSLAN. Students also engage in hands‑on learning through initiatives such as The Green Nest – an outdoor sustainability and wellbeing space featuring a greenhouse with hydroponics, a frog pond, animal program, and outdoor classroom. Developed in collaboration with student leaders and community grants, this space enhances environmental education, student wellbeing, and engagement through alternative learning environments.

STEM education is another cornerstone of learning at Epsom PS. Through real‑world applications in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics, students are encouraged to explore and innovate. A highlight of this is our involvement in the Energy Breakthrough program, where students design, build, and race Human Powered Vehicles (HPVs) in endurance and engineering‑based challenges.

Our school actively promotes student voice and leadership, with opportunities including School and House Captains, Junior School Council, the baring djuwima (Aboriginal student leaders), and our Student Wellbeing Team. These programs help to foster belonging, confidence, and student agency.

As a certified 5‑Star Resource Smart School, we are deeply committed to sustainability and environmental leadership. Our student‑led Green Magpies team plays a key role in our environmental initiatives – promoting waste reduction, energy conservation, and sustainability education across the school.

With strong community partnerships, an active and engaged School Council, and a deep commitment to sustainability, wellbeing, and innovation, Epsom Primary School offers a dynamic, inclusive, and forward‑thinking learning environment where every student is supported to thrive.
