Primary objective
Provide legal and administrative support in relation to court and legal requests, in consultation with program areas and the
Manager Legal, Freedom of Information (FOI) and Complaints Support the Agency to meet its responsibilities and promote
best practice around compliance with the Agency's legal obligations.
Context statement
The Legal, Freedom of Information and Complaints Unit sits within the Office of the Commissioner and ensures the
Department of Corrections is effectively and efficiently fulfilling its obligations under relevant legislation, while improving
Chief Executive oversight and access to legal support, in consultation with the Solicitor for the Northern Territory and other
legal service providers.
Key duties and responsibilities
1. Provide paralegal and research assistance to the Legal, FOI and Complaints team.
2. Assist in the preparation of correspondence including Ministerial briefings, reports and other documents as necessary.
3. Assist in the resolution and case management of legal matters under supervision.
4. Liaise with Solicitor for the Northern Territory and other external legal service providers as appropriate.
1. Assist the Legal and FOI team with its responsibilities with Inquests, legislative delegations and other legal matters.
2. Other duties as required.
Selection criteria
Essential
1. Proven ability to work with legislation and understand legal principles.
2. Knowledge of the issues, principles and practices in the areas of court processes, release of information and information
privacy.
3. Well-developed organisational skills with a proven ability to work in an environment of continuous change with
attributes of flexibility and adaptability.
4. Well-developed oral and written communication skills and ability to interact professionally with a range of internal and
external stakeholders.
1. Ability to work independently and as a member of a team to achieve timely outcomes while maintaining high standards
of accuracy and attention to detail.
Desirable
1. Tertiary qualifications in legal studies or current study towards such qualifications.
2. Knowledge of whole of government policies and procedures.
