The Coastal Marine Ecosystems Research Centre (CMERC) is seeking a distinguished Principal Research Fellow to lead progressive research in applied coastal marine ecology supporting the health and sustainability of tropical coastal ecosystems and fisheries.
Situated within the Great Barrier Reef World Heritage Area, CMERC is home to the world's largest seagrass nursery and with research programmes in coastal habitat restoration, sustainable marine resources and assessing ecosystem health.
Based at CMERC's world-class waterfront facility in Gladstone, you will lead and contribute to impactful applied research focused on fish and crustacean habitat use, mud crab population dynamics and fisheries management, and/or seascape-scale ecosystem connectivity, helping deliver science with real-world impact for biodiversity, fisheries and regional communities.
You will secure and manage external funding, publish influential research and mentor emerging scientists.
In this role, you'll join a dynamic and friendly team of marine scientists and restoration experts, delivering innovative, evidence-based approaches to coastal and marine sustainability.
Collaborating with industry, government and academic partners, you will help drive practical outcomes that support biodiversity, fisheries health, endangered species and climate resilience.

Position Requirements
A doctoral qualification with research expertise in seagrass ecological restoration (or similar coastal restoration specialisations).
Proven research track record, including publications, conference presentations and recognised professional achievements with a H-index figure over 10.
Experience conducting strategically aligned research, with a focus on securing external funding and industry partnerships.
Exceptional interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to collaborate in multidisciplinary teams.
Extensive experience in investigative research, demonstrating expertise in research methodologies, statistical analysis and the preparation of reports and publications.
Strong stakeholder engagement skills, with the ability to provide expert advice and build effective partnerships.
