ABOUT THE ROLE

This position will support the implementation of the Two-Way Science Initiative in the Kimberley region, funded by NIAA, in collaboration with the Department of Education and Catholic Education WA.

Two-Way Science provides an opportunity for students to learn from the world's oldest continuing cultures, to strengthen Aboriginal student's wellbeing and engagement and to build respect for Aboriginal histories, cultures, people, knowledges and experiences amongst school staff and students.

The KLC Two-Way Science Initiative aims to improve Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) learning outcomes through community engagement and intergenerational transmission of Indigenous knowledge. It supports rangers to build education partnerships with communities and schools; leading to increased capacity of Aboriginal families and communities to direct and deliver culturally responsive education programs with education providers.

The Two-Way Science Project Officer will work closely with the Two-Way Science Coordinator and be responsible for working with ranger teams and Traditional Owners to build capacity through operational support and logistics for the delivery of the Initiative.

We are looking for a motivated, well organised and action oriented person, with strong community development skills and a passion for working with Traditional Owners in a culturally based setting.

You will support the planning, capacity building and delivery of on-ground activities of the Two-Way Science Initiative at the KLC. You will take guidance from the Two-Way Science Coordinator, rangers, local community, schools and other stakeholders.

The position operates out of Broome KLC office with travel throughout the Kimberley.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

Duties

* Take guidance from traditional owners and cultural advisors to develop and deliver project activities
* Operational Support and Logistics: Provide essential operational and logistical support to the Two-Way Science Coordinator to ensure smooth execution of the project. This includes assisting with the planning, organising, and coordinating of activities both on-Country and in-class.
* Activity coordination: Support Kimberley ranger groups and schools in the facilitation of educational activities, ensuring all events are aligned with the cultural protocols and goals of the Two-Way Science initiative.
* Resource development: Work with the Coordinator to co-develop Two-Way Science resources tailored to the specific needs of schools, ranger groups, and local communities, ensuring that resources are culturally appropriate
* Monitoring and evaluation Support: Assist in ensuring that monitoring of project activities occurs.
* Collaborative Support within the Land and Sea unit Team: Support other initiatives within the Unit and the Ranger Capacity and Development team, including Ecology and Women's Ranger Development projects, and explore opportunities to co-deliver ranger support projects with other teams.

Project Implementation

* Plan and implement Two-Way Science activities with Rangers and Traditional Owners
* Apply monitoring protocols to track the Two-Way Science Initiative
* Implement project workplans including developing materials, protocols and guiding and conducting research as required

Other

* Maintain compliance with KLC policies, processes and procedures
* Actively contribute to the health and safety of the workplace by adhering to all health and safety policies and procedures
* Demonstrate an awareness of and commitment to the KLC Vision and its Values
* Participate in relevant training and professional development activities
* Other tasks as directed

SELECTION CRITERIA

Essential

* Respectful and strong consultation and communication skills to foster partnerships with Aboriginal communities, organisations and stakeholders
* Demonstrated organisational skills to manage multiple tasks, timelines, and project.
* Demonstrated skills in capacity building to support ranger teams in the planning, coordination and delivery of activities.
* Ability to deliver well planned on-Country events and activities with strong support and engagement from Traditional Owners.
* Current C class drivers' licence
* Current Working With Children Check (WWCC) or the willingness to obtain one
* The ability and willingness to travel away

Desirable

* Ability to understand and communicate the connection between Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) with Traditional Ecological Knowledge.
* Good working knowledge and understanding of Aboriginal cultural and protocols
* Experience in project tracking, monitoring and evaluation
