The Maintenance Assistant supports the Maintenance Department by performing routine maintenance tasks, assisting skilled technicians, and ensuring the safe and efficient operation of machinery, equipment, and facility infrastructure. This role plays a key part in minimizing downtime and maintaining a clean and organized working environment.
Key Responsibilities
* Assist artisans and technicians with maintenance and repair of mechanical and electrical equipment.
* Perform basic maintenance tasks such as cleaning machine components, lubricating moving parts, and replacing filters or worn items.
* Support with breakdown response activities by preparing tools, accessing parts, and ensuring quick turnaround.
* Monitor and report on abnormal machine behaviour or safety hazards.
* Conduct regular facility inspections to identify wear and potential faults.
* Maintain tools and equipment in good working condition.
* Help in organizing the maintenance workshop and stores area.
* Record maintenance activities in logs or checklists as directed.
* Assist with installation or removal of equipment as required.
* Ensure adherence to safety protocols and PPE usage at all times.
Qualifications and Experience
* Matric / Grade 12 or equivalent (essential).
* Technical certificate or N2 in mechanical or electrical field (preferred).
* 1–2 years of relevant maintenance experience in an industrial or manufacturing environment.
* Basic knowledge of mechanical and/or electrical systems and tools.
Skills and Competencies
* Strong attention to detail.
* Good communication and teamwork skills.
* Ability to follow instructions and safety procedures.
* Physically fit and able to perform manual labor.
* Basic understanding of maintenance documentation and work permits.
Working Conditions
* May be required to work shifts, overtime, or standby.
* Exposure to industrial noise, dust, and machine operation environments.
* Must comply with all health and safety regulations.
