About Justice
When you join the Department of Justice, you become part of a people-focused organisation, working hard to make our community a fairer and safer place to live. We offer many different employment opportunities in locations around Western Australia. You will have a chance to make a real difference to your local communities and to the lives of those you work with.
About The Role
Banksia Hill and Unit 18 Youth Detention Centres are seeking dynamic and enthusiastic classroom teachers who have a passion for teaching young people at educational risk in a youth custodial setting.
Teaching in a youth custodial setting is a unique experience that provides teachers in Perth with an opportunity to work with children and young people from across Western Australia. The teaching experience is challenging and rewarding and provides teachers with opportunities to develop skills in trauma informed education. Young people in the school present with highly complex needs and challenging behaviour and many of the young people have learning disabilities and difficulties. Classroom teachers are therefore required to differentiate learning experiences to ensure all young people engage and participate in learning.
The school is committed to teaching literacy and numeracy using an instructional model underpinned by Explicit Direct Instruction. We apply the principles of the Science of Reading and the Science of Learning in our pedagogical approach. We are committed to professional growth and support classroom teachers by providing instructional coaching.
The role requires classroom teachers to be dynamic and flexible in their delivery of education. Classrooms are multi-age and multi-ability, inclusive and safe. There is a high turnover of students within classrooms. Teaching needs to be responsive to this to ensure every student matters, and every moment counts.
The school's primary goal is to close the educational gap for young people in custody by providing them with the skills needed to engage in further education, training or employment in the community. Classroom teachers are required to complete lesson plans and school reports, write curriculum, manage resources, participate in validation, and contribute to a collegial environment.
The school is looking to employ classroom teachers who are capable of teaching across the curriculum with limited technological resources, and who are committed to evidence-based practice with an understanding or interest in the Science of Reading.
Teachers who are resilient and flexible, who can manage challenging behaviours using a trauma informed approach are ideal candidates. A passion for teaching Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children and young people is essential as many young people in the school are Indigenous. Teachers who enjoy working in a team environment and can collaborate and lead are strongly encouraged to apply.
