**The Opportunity**
The Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (the department) is seeking talented and motivated leaders to fill multiple First Assistant Secretary roles across the Department.
In the role of First Assistant Secretary, you will lead and manage a division, determine and be accountable for objectives and priorities; represent the department with key stakeholders and external organisations. As a member of the division's leadership team, you will work across the Group to deliver outcomes, promoting and modelling an inclusive culture.
These roles require strong leadership a Division, in managing resources and enhancing organisational capability. A strong understanding of Commonwealth agency operations and highly developed understanding of the of the Departments strategic vision.
Depending on the role you may be responsible for aspects of Australia's international development program, including the management of Official Development Assistance (ODA).
These roles may see you lead foreign policy, addressing strategic challenges through policy development and leading strategic initiatives.
Australia's international development is fundamental to Australia's engagement with the world, and in shaping our region, and our country's, modern, multicultural identity.
These roles will require self-motivated, agile, and strategic thinkers to build relationships in a complex environment. As a strong leader you will contribute to and communicate the strategic direction while developing trust and building organisational capability.
In addition to your outstanding leadership capabilities, to be a contender for these roles, you will have a proven track record of delivering high quality outcomes, achieved through:
- extensive experience in the provision of high level, evidence-based advice
- an appreciation of the challenges of working on a large, geographically dispersed, and complex organisation
- excellent inter-personnel skills, sound judgement and stakeholder engagements skills
- ability to deliver large-scale reform
- demonstrated experience in managing complex projects and/or programs in challenging environments
- proven ability to brief Senior Executives, Ministers and Stakeholders.

**Eligibility Requirements**
Under section 22(8) of the Public Service Act 1999, employees must be Australian citizens to be employed in the Australian Public Service (APS) unless the Agency Head has agreed otherwise, in writing.
Depending on the role into which you are placed, you may also be required to obtain and maintain a Working with Vulnerable People/Children registration (or equivalent).
