Principal Legal Officer, Commercial Law
Job Responsibilities: The Principal Legal Officer (PLO) in the Commercial Law Section is a subject matter expert who is responsible for supervising and providing second counselling to lawyers within their team.
They handle matters of a more technical or sensitive nature, ensuring tasks are completed efficiently and driving issues forward.
PLOs are adept at navigating complex situations through effective stakeholder engagement, clear communication, and subject matter knowledge.
They are required to adopt a pragmatic approach to problem-solving and provide exceptional customer service to clients.
As leaders, PLOs are responsible for developing their staff, setting goals, and driving performance through effective performance management.
They delegate work appropriately and measure performance, working collaboratively with other PLOs in managing workflow and contributing to team and branch meetings.
They also work closely with Senior Executive Service (SES) in ensuring appropriate briefing and escalation, ensuring support for themselves and their team.
Education and Experience: Essential qualifications for the position include a degree in law from an Australian university or a comparable overseas degree recognised in Australia for admission to practice, along with a Practising Certificate or eligibility to attain one.
Candidates must have at least three years of post-qualification experience.
Salary: The position offers a classification of Principal Legal Officer with a salary range of $157, to $177,, plus % superannuation.
The employment type is ongoing (permanent) and full-time, with part-time pro-rata options available.
Additional Information: The role is part of a diverse commercial practice focusing on property law, leasing, major procurements, intellectual property, probity, funding, and grant arrangements.
The Commercial Law Section is a collegiate team that works collaboratively to provide pragmatic and concise advice to effectively manage legal risk on behalf of the Department.
