Primary objective

Provide high level project support, administration and advice in relation to the maintenance, ongoing improvement and

promotion of the department's emergency management and work health and safety arrangements.

Context statement

The Governance Unit provides frameworks and policies to promote good governance and effective risk management, audit

and review practices, emergency management and WHS for the department.

Key duties and responsibilities

1. Initiate, develop and implement operational emergency management and training initiatives.

2. Support the Heads of Division and the Leadership Group regarding operational emergency and WHS related risks.

3. Develop and implement the department's emergency management and WHS management system and provide

continual improvement of compliance requirements as prescribed by WHS legislation.

4. Coordinate the distribution of WHS information and promotional material at departmental locations.

1. Build and maintain relationships and ongoing liaison with the WHS Management Committee members and other

stakeholders.

6. Analyse health and safety incident data and provide regular reporting to the departmental senior management and the

WHS Management Committee.

7. Provide expert advice and support on:

o WHS maters to managers and staff to support the achievement of strategy outcomes and legislative frameworks.

o Work cover issues including legislative compliance, rehabilitation and return to work programs.

o Early intervention strategies and processes regarding injury management prior to lodgement and acceptance of a

workers compensation claim.

Selection criteria

Essential

1. Demonstrated knowledge of emergency planning and disaster response coordination, public safety and security, WHS

and inspection requirements.

1. Experience in delivering education programs for a diverse range of staff.
2. Demonstrated well-developed oral and written communication skills, with sound understanding of cross-cultural issues

and sensitivities and an ability to work with diverse range of stakeholders.

1. Demonstrated high level of flexibility and adaptability to operate effectively within a changing environment.
2. Experience in applying strong negotiation and conflict management skills operationally, and ability to interpret relevant

legislation.

1. Demonstrated ability to be innovative to develop new insights into situations.

Desirable

1. Sound experience in developing training programs and drills for diverse staff across a geographically dispersed

environment.

2. Qualification in WHS and/or a relevant discipline in emergency response.

3. Hold a Certificate IV Training and assessment training.
