Primary objective
Maintain the facilities of the school including buildings, grounds, security, vehicles and hydrotherapy pool to provide a
functional, safe and secure learning environment in accordance with Department of Education and school policies and Work
Health and Safety regulations.
Context statement
Acacia Hill School, located in Alice Springs, is the only special school in Central Australia, and has an enrolment of
approximately 120 students ranging from Preschool to Year 12. Over 80% of students need support with communication.
The school’s highly specialised learning and wellbeing programs cater developmentally for students with intellectual disability
or multiple complex disabilities using the Early Years Learning Framework, the pre-foundation Victorian Curriculum and the
Australian Curriculum. The school is committed to fostering learning without limits for every student.
Key duties and responsibilities
1. Regularly inspect and undertake general repairs and maintenance to school grounds that require technical, general
handyman or tradesman skills as required. Carry out a range of tasks to make sure the school premises are in a neat and
orderly condition.
2. Action potential health and safety risks by immediately reporting or exercising judgement in rectifying the problem,
3. Inspect and unlock the school premises each morning before start time and inspect and lock at the end of the day.
4. Carry out repairs and maintenance to vehicles, buildings, fixtures and fittings and grounds, including specialist equipment
and facilities such as hoists and hydrotherapy pool, to ensure a safe learning environment and compliance with Work
Health and Safety regulations.
5. Liaise with contractors to ensure specifications and regulations are met and repairs are completed.
6. Maintain effective operational support services including bus driving, mail collection, relocation of furniture and
equipment, local purchasing and relevant asset control.
Selection criteria
Essential
1. Knowledge of Work Health and Safety practices and actively participate as a member of the WHS Committee.
2. Demonstrated general handyman ability with an ability to produce a high standard of finish in buildings, vehicles, furniture
and fittings.
3. Proven ability to communicate effectively and courteously with students, school personnel, contractors and the public.
4. Demonstrated ability to work as a member of a team, take direction and work individually with limited supervision,
displaying initiative and flexibility and ability to prioritise work and meet deadlines.
5. Demonstrated ability to maintain a commercial-scale hydrotherapy pool to legislated standards or willingness to
undertake training.
6. Demonstrated ability to maintain a high level of confidentiality.

The successful applicant will be required to hold a Working with Children Clearance Notice and C class driver’s licence with
the ability to drive manual vehicles.
