Principal Engineer – Digital Platform

About the Role
We are seeking a Principal Platform Engineer to provide technical leadership for the build and optimisation of a new flagship digital platform (CRM/BPM) as part of a multi-year digital modernisation program.
This critical role will oversee up to three engineering squads, guide technical strategy, and ensure platform stability, scalability, and resilience.
You will collaborate closely with program-level architects, data specialists, product teams, and business stakeholders to deliver high-quality solutions and support the transition from legacy systems.
Key Responsibilities
Platform Strategy & Architecture: Define and maintain the long-term vision for platform infrastructure.
Lead initiatives to improve system scalability, security, resilience, and operational performance.
Recommend design solutions aligned with organisational objectives and best practices.
Application Design & Development: Drive the architecture of the new platform, including data models, reusable integration patterns, and application design.
Embed accessibility, security, reliability, and scalability into all technical solutions.
Agile Delivery Support: Partner with product managers, designers, and analysts to define features, plan releases, and prioritise work.
Provide technical guidance to engineers, allocate tasks, review code, and mitigate technical risks.
CI/CD, Automation & DevOps Practices: Develop and implement CI/CD pipelines, infrastructure as code (IaC) practices, and test automation frameworks to improve deployment efficiency, quality, and security across all environments.
Team Leadership: Assemble, mentor, and motivate engineering squads.
Foster a culture of high performance, collaboration, and continuous improvement.
Support recruitment, onboarding, and professional development.
Risk Management & Quality Assurance: Identify and address technical risks.
Ensure architectural consistency, code quality, and thorough testing.
Oversee technical work from vendors and internal teams.
Conduct root cause analysis for critical incidents and implement preventive measures.
Stakeholder Communication: Act as the primary technical contact for your project.
Communicate decisions, trade-offs, and progress clearly with business, delivery, and executive stakeholders.
Collaborate with vendor technical teams when necessary.
Transition & Operational Readiness: Lead go-live planning, data migration, and legacy system decommissioning.
Support the establishment of long-term support models, ensuring service continuity and operational readiness.
Continuous Improvement & Governance: Monitor platform performance, assess emerging technologies, and recommend enhancements.
Establish governance frameworks and maintain comprehensive documentation for compliance and reporting purposes.
Required Skills & Experience
Strong expertise in CRM/BPM platforms, with knowledge of MuleSoft, Drupal, and related technologies.
Awareness of AI and workflow automation is advantageous.
Proven experience delivering multiple platform or application builds, including system cutovers and transitions from legacy systems.
Demonstrated leadership of engineering squads or digital teams.
Excellent communication, documentation, and cross-functional collaboration skills.
Outcome-focused with a commitment to speed, flexibility, and quality of deliverables with minimal supervision.
Experience in adapting to government digital standards and practices is highly desirable.
