The Aboriginal Legal Service (ALS) was established in a critical act of self-determination over 50 years ago as part of the Aboriginal rights protest movement. We provide high-quality, culturally safe legal and support services for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people throughout NSW and the ACT, and fight for social justice and equity for our communities.
Your Impact:
In this role, you will support Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children and young people involved in the criminal justice system, working closely with solicitors to provide holistic, culturally safe support. Your work will focus on improving legal and non-legal outcomes through practical assistance, referrals, and strong community connections. Each day, you will:
* Provide culturally appropriate support, referrals and basic legal information to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children, young people and families.
* Support clients through transport, brokerage and attendance at court, police stations and appointments
* Engage with clients in homes and community settings to maintain contact and support communication with solicitors.
* Follow up referrals and work collaboratively with external agencies and community services.
* Assist solicitors with client files, court diaries, data entry and use of legal practice systems.
* Maintain confidentiality and work in line with ALS policies, values, WHS and Code of Conduct

* Be a proud Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander person, recognised by your community.
* Experience supporting Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children and young people, including those who are LGBTIQ+ or living with disability.
* Strong understanding of Aboriginal cultural and social needs, with respect for cultural practices in service delivery
* Ability to build and maintain strong relationships with community, stakeholders, and service partners.
* Well-developed organisational and communication skills, including community education and flexible work capacity.
* Computer literate with a current NSW driver's licence and willingness to travel.
Desirable:
* Certificate IV in Youth Work, Community Services or similar, and/or experience in an Aboriginal community-controlled organisation
