Job Summary
Provide support as required to the construction team reporting directly to the Project Field Engineer on an EPC (direct‑hire) Project. Supervise and/or direct activities relating to construction engineering, layout of foundation locations, equipment locations, structural steel placement, subcontracts, and engineering liaison with the design functional group. Use design drawings, model and specifications to determine associated commodities locations. Works with Field Engineering to support field verification of materials as appropriate and needed. Provides technical support as related to survey to Field Engineering and Superintendents in a wide range of situations and configurations. This multi‑disciplined field engineering role involves earthwork, excavation, concrete, structural steel, marine works, etc. installation activities. The position is offered on a FIFO basis to North Queensland, operating on a 2:1 roster.
Major Responsibilities
- Lead the oversight of all survey operations and provide technical direction to the direct‑hire survey team, including implementation of project safety, quality, and environmental programs.
- Responsible for the accurate layout of construction work, recordation of field data according to job specifications, and appropriate methods of performing survey activities. Perform and/or check survey computations as required and provide project completion documentation including "As‑Built" records.
- Establish and maintain the project’s survey control network; review field work and perform accurate network least squares adjustments; oversee the calibration baseline checks of survey instruments.
- Supervise the preparation of survey CAD drawings, including generation of Digital Terrain Models (DTM) and volume computations; oversee the development and management of survey data; support the implementation of project’s machine control technology.
- Oversee the implementation of 3D Laser Scanning operations, reality capture, processing of scan data, and the UAV (drone) program.
Education and Experience Requirements
- Engineering/Technical degree and 9 years of experience in heavy construction/industrial surveying, involving a mix of field and office duties with contemporary instruments and software, with at least 3 years of supervisory experience or 15 years of experience (in lieu of a degree), with at least 5 years of supervisory experience.
Required Knowledge and Skills
- Multi‑disciplined field engineering survey experience with earthwork, excavation, concrete, structural steel, mechanical, and piping installation layout and verification.
- Knowledge of engineering and construction methods and processes customarily acquired through specialized instruction or practical experience.
- Knowledge of Bechtel’s “Zero Incidents” safety program.
- Knowledge of Bechtel quality standards; must have a solid record of successful project completion with little to zero rework.
- Knowledge of construction survey principles.
- Knowledge of supervisory functions relating to industrial surveying field & office activities.
- Demonstrated ability to maintain a safe work ethic and work environment at all times.
- Demonstrated ability to work in a team‑based environment, formulate working relationships with survey team members, other departments, contractors, and survey functional management.
- Displays effective communication skills crucial to motivating team members and presenting plans clearly and concisely.
- Proficiency with Survey CAD software, including generation of Digital Terrain Models (DTM) and volume computations.
- Experience with Robotic Total Stations, Digital Levels and GNSS survey systems.
- Experience using Trimble survey equipment and Access field software.
- Experience working on multiple work fronts.
- Can work under time constraints and must be adaptable to changing conditions.
