Learn how a merit list or pool may be used
Applicants suitable for the role but not offered the current vacancy may be placed in a merit list or pool. If the applicant agrees, the results may be shared with other Australian Public Service (APS) agencies for filling similar roles. Applicants may be offered future roles without reapplying. A merit list or pool may be used for up to 18 months.

What is this used for?
This register allows candidates to express interest in non-ongoing (temporary) employment opportunities with ONI, providing access to skilled and experienced individuals at short notice. Applicants may be considered for future temporary (fixed-term) and casual vacancies. Current APS employees interested in transfers and secondments can register their interest on the ONI 2024-2025 APS Temporary and Permanent S26 Register.

All vacancies are based in Canberra, and you will only be contacted if a role matching your attributes, skills, and experience becomes available.

ONI may use this register to fill vacancies from APS Level 1 to EL2. The classifications include:
APS1-2 – School leavers, apprentices, early career starters
APS3-4 – Graduates, entry-level, administrative roles
APS5-6 – Mid-career roles, emerging leaders, managers
EL1-2 – Middle managers, subject matter experts

Eligibility and Security Requirements
Australian citizenship: You must be an Australian citizen. If you do not have an Australian-issued birth certificate, submit your Australian Citizenship Certificate.
Background check: We must verify, from independent sources, periods of 12 months or more spent outside Australia.
Security clearance: Willingness to undergo a comprehensive security assessment, including cooperation and provision of necessary information.
Notes
Non-Ongoing Contract Requirements:
Contracts are initially up to 12 months, extendable to 18 months once. Extensions beyond that are not permitted, and the total engagement period cannot exceed 2 years for APS and EL employees engaged through formal merit-based processes.
