Overview

You will assist the Queensland Police Service in developing trust and understanding with local First Nations communities and breaking down barriers between the community and the police. You will build and maintain strong relationships between the community and the Queensland Police Service.

Role requirements

- This is an identified position; it is a genuine occupational requirement that a First Nations person fills this position as permitted by relevant anti-discrimination provisions.
- Driving: the occupant is required to hold a Queensland C class driver's licence or have the ability to acquire one.
- Uniform and dress: adherence to the Police Liaison Officer uniform and the QPS Code of Dress and Appearance.
- Work schedule: may involve a set roster, weekends and shift work to attend local festivals and forums, with shift penalties and overtime where applicable.

Core capability requirements

- Contribute to organisational understanding of First Nations cultures.
- Assist police officers to communicate effectively with cultural appropriateness to community members by providing advice on First Nations customs and protocols.
- Work with QPS members to identify opportunities to strengthen community engagement and culturally appropriate crime prevention and early intervention strategies.
- Assist First Nations community members to access policing services and advise on referrals to other community services where necessary.
- Engage proactively with First Nations and other multicultural/community groups to identify and build community-led programs and initiatives.
- Identify and link key stakeholders across police, community and government agencies to support community-based programs and initiatives to improve safety.
