Primary objective
As a Supervisor of the Territory Pathology Phlebotomy work team, oversee the provision of timely, high quality and cost-effective
phlebotomy services. This service provision includes clients of both Royal Darwin and Palmerston Regional Hospitals, referred
patients at Darwin Private Hospital, Department of Health and its various divisions and the public of the Northern Territory.
Context statement
The successful applicant will supervise the Phlebotomy team, taking responsibility for the co-ordination of the work schedule, shift
rostering and the daily management of 14 part-time team members, across two main sites (RDH and PRH), while actively
participating in the blood collection roster. The position maps to CF5 in the Northern Territory Capability Framework.
Key duties and responsibilities
1. Supervise and train team members, under the direction of the Client Service Manager. Direct and co-ordinate daily workflow
and staffing, while active participation in blood collection. Demonstrate accuracy, attention-to-detail and organisational skills
while providing a courteous, prompt and professional service.
1. Follow defined service quality standards, work health and safety policies and procedures relating to the work being undertaken
in order to ensure high quality, safe services, and workplaces.
1. Foster a positive workplace culture through exemplary leadership practices and role modelling behaviour.
2. Provide clear communication, promote teamwork, and support staff to develop competent time management skills. Monitor
work performance utilising regular and constructive feedback, in consultation with the Client Services Manager.
1. As Supervisor monitor and maintain blood collection stock and consumables, equipment maintenance and participate in quality
document review and revision.
Selection criteria
Essential
1. Possession of a Certificate III or IV in Blood Collection Techniques/Phlebotomy Collection or equivalent qualification is
desirable. Formal training in Human Resource Management or Giving Feedback is desirable.
2. Relevant work experience demonstrating extensive knowledge of pathology diagnostic tests, specimen types along with
Phlebotomy techniques and service provision guidelines is essential for this position. Leadership role in the public or private
sector, demonstrating commitment to the effective management of a Phlebotomy team and the ability to respond positively
to change is desirable.
1. The demonstration of an in-depth technical knowledge and practical skills in blood collection is essential. Demonstrated
appropriate interpersonal, communication, organisational and time management skills which have resulted in effective team
membership is essential.
1. Essential attributes include demonstration of proactive and professional behaviour; promote and adopt positive and balanced
approach to work unit and support team members in development and change processes. Interaction with people of diverse
cultures and cross-cultural awareness is essential.
