Senior Clinical Fellow in General Surgery and Colorectal Surgery

The Homerton Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust is appointing a Senior Clinical Fellow in Colorectal and General Surgery. The post holder will be responsible for ward rounds, undertake general surgery and colorectal outpatient clinics, and assist on colorectal and general surgery theatre lists. The role offers opportunities to teach and train, participate in audit and quality improvement work, and gain experience in open, laparoscopic, robotic colorectal surgery and endoscopy.
The position is full‐time, with a 1 in 12 on‐call rotation that includes night shifts and commensurate banding. It is a 6‐month post covering the gap for a deanery trainee.
Main duties of the job
• Ensure safe and appropriate management of general and colorectal surgery patients.
• Participate in the postgraduate and undergraduate teaching and training programme within the hospital.
• Work with the directorate to contribute to service development and routine administrative duties.
• Maintain and develop clinical knowledge and practice in line with Trust policies and the NHS Code of Behaviour.
• Promote continuous professional development, including study leave entitlement.
Timetable
The weekly timetable will broadly follow that of the consultant with whom the appointee is attached when not on call. Shortlisted candidates will receive a sample timetable. Flexibility is required to meet service needs, e.g., arriving earlier and staying later on days when supporting in theatres.

Job responsibilities
• Support supervising consultants in all clinical activities – theatres, day‐surgery theatres, out‐patients and ward work.
• Play an active role in improving the emergency surgical pathway, especially the effective running of the CEPOD list.
• Participate in registrar on‐call rota including night shifts (1 in 12 rotation, no more than 4 consecutive nights, with 6‐week notice for rota changes).
• Provide first‐class service, demonstrate effective leadership, take responsibility, and respond to service needs.
• Contribute to the management of the clinical service and service development.
Person Specification Qualifications – Essential
* MBBS or other undergraduate medical degree
* MRCS or equivalent postgraduate qualification
Qualifications – Desirable
* MRCS or equivalent postgraduate qualification
Experience – Essential
* Basic clinical training and experience in laparoscopic surgery.
Experience – Desirable
* Registrar grade experience in upper or lower GI surgery.
Skills – Essential (clinical)
* Clinical and operative skill levels consistent with a senior registrar.
* Ability to take responsibility, lead, make decisions and respond appropriately to service needs.
* Awareness of the overall business environment in which the hospital operates.
* Experience of undergraduate and postgraduate teaching.
