Job Description
The Senior Corporate Counsel will serve as a trusted advisor to Optus Enterprise and Business, providing expert legal guidance to enable informed commercial decision-making and ensuring compliance across operations.
This role will be the primary legal lead for complex, high-value projects, delivering specialist advice on telecommunications, ICT, cloud-led services, security, and related regulatory matters.
The Senior Corporate Counsel will work closely with senior executives and stakeholders, negotiating with sophisticated customers and vendors, identifying legal and regulatory risks in new products, and facilitating contract approvals.
Proactive monitoring of legal developments and continuous improvement of legal support processes will be central to the role, ensuring Optus remains competitive while managing risk in a fast-paced, transaction-driven environment.
Beyond project delivery, the Senior Corporate Counsel will help shape the legal capability of the Optus Enterprise and Business, potentially managing or mentoring a small team, building legal intellectual capital, and developing governance structures that support sound decision-making.
They will collaborate with other senior lawyers to contribute to the overall strength and wellbeing of the Optus Legal Team and, where necessary, manage external legal service providers.
Key Responsibilities
* Deliver clear, commercially focused legal advice, manage risks, protect IP and revenue, and keep the business informed of legal obligations and changes.
* Negotiate and structure major contracts and transactions to protect Optus' interests, align with financial strategies, manage risks, and enable efficient, customer-acceptable agreements.
* Manage disputes and litigation to minimise financial, operational, and legal risks to Optus.
* Oversee regulatory risk, ensure legal compliance, and develop proactive strategies in response to regulatory changes.
* Develop and maintain legal systems, governance structures, and processes to deliver efficient, consistent legal services. Ensure legal support and customer communications are clear, timely, commercially relevant, and fair to customers.
* Demonstrate global, strategic, and commercial thinking while engaging stakeholders, leading change, building capability, and driving results.
Required Skills and Qualifications
Admitted solicitor (Australia or equivalent overseas), with 10+ years' post-admission legal experience.
In-depth knowledge of the Telecommunications Act, Competition and Consumer Act, Privacy Act, Intellectual Property law, and broad commercial law experience including complex contract negotiation.
Proven ability to deliver commercially focused legal support, influence senior stakeholders, and provide pragmatic solutions that align with business objectives.
Excellent drafting, negotiation, and stakeholder engagement skills, with the ability to communicate effectively at all organisational levels.
Experienced in leading, coaching, and managing legal teams while fostering trust-based relationships with internal clients.
Highly driven, proactive, and skilled in managing competing priorities, conflict resolution, and delivering results in fast-paced environments.
