A major NSW Government department is undertaking a large, multi‑year modernisation program to upgrade a highly visible application. The department is expanding delivery capacity and is seeking several Principal Developers to help transform a legacy platform into modern, domain‑aligned digital services.
The Principal Developer will be involved in designing, developing, and modernising customer-facing services using React on the front end and Spring Boot on the back end. While the role is primarily front‑end focused, strong full‑stack capability is required due to the complexity of system integrations and legacy behaviour mapping.
Key Responsibilities
* Develop modern, scalable, and accessible React applications aligned with government standards.
* Build and maintain Spring Boot services and APIs following established patterns and domain structures.
* Analyse and understand legacy Java components (including older libraries) to ensure accurate feature migration.
* Contribute to breaking up a monolithic application into domain‑based portals and services.
* Work in a containerised AWS environment using microservice architecture.
* Collaborate with QA engineers to support automated testing using Playwright and other internal tools.
* Participate fully in Agile ceremonies and contribute to continuous delivery and engineering uplift.
* Document technical decisions, components, and patterns clearly and effectively.
To be successful much of the following must be emphasised in your CV:
* Strong expertise in React and modern front‑end engineering practices.
* Solid experience with Spring Boot, REST APIs, and backend integration.
* Proven experience working on modernisation, upgrade, or transformation projects.
* Ability to read and understand legacy Java code, including older libraries such as Hibernate.
* Familiarity with microservices, containers, and cloud-hosted environments (AWS preferred).
* Experience collaborating within Agile teams and contributing to engineering best practices.
* Strong communication and analytical skills, including the ability to work across multiple domains.
Highly Desirable
* Previous experience within government-related digital platforms.
* Exposure to design systems and large-scale React component frameworks.
* Understanding of observability practices (logging, metrics, tracing).
