Primary objective
Manage the Southern Region planning and development team in its professional and administrative roles in administering the development
assessment process under the Planning Act and contribute to the delivery of an effective and efficient planning framework in order to
achieve orderly land use planning and development in the Southern Region.

Key duties and responsibilities
1. Provide high level professional advice and information to the Development Consent Authority (DCA), the Northern Territory (NT)

Planning Commission, the Minister for Lands, Planning and Workplace, relevant Government agencies, the development industry
and the community on planning and development issues in the Southern Region.

2. Provide high level leadership and management to the Southern Region planning and development team, utilising contemporary
management skills to provide advice and support to enable staff to build effective team relationships, achieve multi-skilling and to
manage change effectively.

3. Formulate land use policies and strategic plans in consultation with stakeholders and the community to ensure that land is developed
for the sustainable economic, environmental and social benefits of Territorians.

4. Establish appropriate service level strategies and develop imaginative and innovative approaches to service delivery and ensure the
team has a strong customer focus.

5. Analyse and continuously review current systems and procedures for the efficient processing of applications in accordance with the
Planning Act and the NT Planning Scheme.

Selection criteria
Essential
1. A degree or diploma related to land use planning from an Australian tertiary institution, or equivalent; or admission, or eligibility for

admission, to full membership of the Planning Institute of Australia.
2. Ability to provide high level professional advice to government, industry and the community on land planning and development

processes and requirements.
3. High level oral and written communication skills with demonstrated ability to effectively negotiate, mediate and collaborate with

various authorities, other agencies, local communities, developers, industry, professionals and the general public.
4. Well-developed political and cross-cultural awareness skills.
5. Proven ability to be focussed on outputs, and to adjust products or service delivery to ensure the branch meets the needs of its clients

and stakeholders.
6. High level contemporary leadership and management skills including business planning, human resource management, human resource

development, budgeting and management of output performance.
7. Sound skilled knowledge of land planning practices and issues, particularly as they relate to the NT situation.
8. Current Northern Territory Drivers Licence or ability to obtain.

Desirable
1. Sound knowledge of the Northern Territory planning legislation, procedures, systems and Departmental practices.
