Overview
The Junior Medical Officer (JMO) Unit at Coffs Harbour Health Campus is an award-winning, agile hub dedicated to nurturing the next generation of medical professionals. In 2023, we were presented with the Judy Muller Award. The Coffs Harbour Health Campus is an acute regional teaching hospital with 355 beds, located on the Mid-North Coast. It serves a population of over 73,000 with a catchment of more than 100,000, and offers comprehensive services across operating theatres, ICU, emergency, radiology, pathology, obstetrics, paediatrics, and more. The campus also hosts various allied health, Aboriginal and Cultural Wellbeing, cancer institute facilities, and a regional medical school. This role is part of the SRMO Critical Care rotation, including ICU, Emergency Department, Anaesthetics, and potentially Nights, with a focus on foundational critical care experience in Intensive Care Medicine. The Coffs Harbour ICU is classified as CICM Limited General Training (G6) Rural. Participation includes a 24/7 on-site and on-call roster.
What you'll be doing
To provide effective medical services to patients under supervision, while developing expertise in medical practice in an inpatient and outpatient public health setting. Responsibilities include:
- Take a leadership role in coordinating the admission, management and discharge planning of patients in the Unit and ensure documentation in the medical record.
- Conduct day-to-day assessment and management of patients in the Unit, communicating with patients and families about the nature of conditions and treatments.
- Coordinate care with the team, arrange consultations, plan discharge and liaise with local medical officers and community-based care modalities.
- Provide detailed verbal hand-overs between Medical Officers at shift start and end.
- Work within a multidisciplinary team, liaising with referring Medical Practitioners and arranging transfers to tertiary institutions as needed.
- Maintain medical records (including electronic records) to ensure effective communication, service planning and legal compliance.
- Participate in educational programs and assist in the education of medical and nursing staff; participate in audit and quality assurance activities and morbidity and mortality reviews.
- Comply with Legislative requirements under Occupational Health & Safety, Privacy Acts, and EEO, and conduct all activity professionally and responsibly.
- Make decisions concerning patients in consultation with their immediate supervisor and team.
- Participate in a 24/7 onsite and on-call roster.
The SRMO rotation includes the Critical Care experience in ICU (CICM Rural), Emergency Department with rotating shifts within the Emergency Medicine Unit (EMU), and Anesthetics. SRMOs perform patient assessments and clinical procedures within the scope of training, under consultant supervision, and report to the Director of the Emergency Department. The Anesthetic term provides foundational experience in a department that is ANZCA accredited.
Qualifications
- MBBS or equivalent, currently registered or eligible for registration with the Medical Board of Australia in an appropriate registration category.
- Completion of at least two postgraduate years working as a medical officer with demonstrated competence.
- Demonstrated commitment to rural and regional health with an understanding of the health needs of these communities.
- Ability to work independently within a supervised complex clinical environment with strong clinical skills and judgment.
- Teamwork, time management and problem-solving skills as part of a multidisciplinary team.
- Excellent communication skills (verbal and written) and computer skills.
- Professional attitude, flexibility for after-hours, overtime and on-call rosters and rotations between services and locations (including rural areas).
- Good organizational and time management skills with a commitment to quality improvement, patient safety and risk management.
