We are seeking an experienced full-time Senior Editor to join our Australian Publishing Division and contribute to the success of its acclaimed Children’s, Fiction and Non-fiction publishing program. About the role:
Reporting to the Editorial Manager, you’ll be a permanent, full-time member of an Editorial team with a strong culture of excellence and teamwork. You will work closely with our Publishers and our Production team and thrive on project editing fiction, non-fiction and children’s titles (including picture books), producing all assigned titles to the highest standard, on time and within budget. Your day-to-day responsibilities will include:
1. Building strong, collaborative relationships with authors and illustrators
2. Scheduling and project editing titles to meet all critical path dates and editorial standards
3. Booking, briefing and reviewing the work of third parties such as freelance editors, designers, typesetters and indexers
4. Hands-on structural editing, including writing structural reports, and copyediting and proofreading for picture books, including editing illustrations
5. Preparing and providing advanced material for sales, marketing and publicity – including book proofs
6. Sourcing and maintaining metadata, including writing copy
7. Managing legal reviews, permissions and sensitivity reads
8. Briefing designers and producing full final cover and internal picture sections for printing
9. Providing training, mentoring and limited supervision of junior editorial colleagues, including interns
10. Contributing to team best practice via discussions, development of tools and contributing to workflows
11. Acting as a confident presenter and ambassador for Hachette and our authors.
The salary for this role will be dependent on experience, but will be in line with the Senior Editor salary in the Book Industry Award 2020, plus superannuation.
About you:
You’re a fit for the role if you have these well-developed skills and attributes:
1. A very high level of skill in all aspects of editorial craft, including a proven track record of developmental and structural editing, as well as copyediting and proofreading, and meticulous attention to detail
2. Outstanding organisation and scheduling skills, with the ability to project manage multiple complex titles simultaneously and adapt to meet deadlines
3. Exceptional interpersonal and communication skills in dealing with internal and external stakeholders, with particular strengths in author and illustrator care and adapting to differing personalities
4. Ability to work autonomously, making independent decisions with sound judgement and without close supervision
5. Energetic team player, mentoring and training more junior members of the team
6. A minimum of five years’ editorial experience in a similar role, and tertiary qualifications in English, Editing, Creative Writing or similar
7. Avid reader, enthusiastically engaged with the commercial and creative aspects of the contemporary Australian publishing landscape
8. Proficiency in MS Office and Adobe Acrobat, as well as an ability to learn new technical skills such as database use.
