The Department of the House of Representatives offers temporary employment opportunities for people looking for short-term work. The Temporary Employment Register is open for interested candidates to submit an expression of interest for non-ongoing roles directly supporting the work of the House of Representatives and Members of Parliament at Parliament House in Canberra. The Register enables us to access appropriately skilled and experienced individuals at short notice. This temporary employment register may be used to fill non-ongoing (temporary) employment opportunities across classifications and program areas. Overview The Department of the House of Representatives provides services to support the efficient conduct of the House of Representatives, its committees and certain joint committees as well as a range of services and facilities for the Members in Parliament House. The department also promotes the work of the House in the community and supports the conduct of the Parliament's international and regional relations. Integrity All employees of the Department of the House of Representatives are responsible and accountable for adhering to standards and obligations for conduct, performance and behaviour required under legislation and set out in departmental policies. This includes: • performing in accordance with the requirements of the Parliamentary Service Act 1999, including adhering to the Parliamentary Service Values, Employment Principles and Code of Conduct. • adhering to the Behaviour Standards for Commonwealth Parliamentary Workplaces including working effectively and productively with others, fostering supportive and respectful working relationships free from bullying, harassment and discrimination. • performing duties in a professional manner and providing non-partisan advice and support to each Member of Parliament and parliamentary committees and to the House of Representatives as an institution. The key duties of the position include Capabilities Capabilities expected of employees across all program areas and classifications include: • organisational, coordination and administrative skills; • flexibility, tact and discretion in undertaking duties; • the provision of high-quality client service and advice; • effective management of multiple tasks simultaneously; • well-developed communication skills; • the ability to work collaboratively with others and independently within set timeframes; • attention to detail and accuracy; and • an awareness of protocols for handling parliamentary materials and in dealing with Members of Parliament and their staff. Program areas The Department comprises four program areas, each consisting of offices that specialise in providing timely and high-quality services. Committee Office [PSL4 to EB2] The Committee Office supports parliamentary committees in their work of examining policy and legislation, and of scrutinising the executive government, through the provision of procedural, research, analytical, drafting and administrative support. Procedure Office [PSL4 to EB2] The Procedure Office provides procedural research, publications and services explaining the work of the House and its institutional role. The Office comprises of the Chamber Research Section and Procedural Development Section. Within the office, it maintains statistical records about the work of the House and provides procedural research support to internal and external stakeholders. The Procedure Office also provides secretariat support for the House Procedure Committee. Information Management Office [PSL2 to EB2] The Information Management Office (IMO) is part of the Office of the Clerk Assistant Procedure. Working closely with the department's IT service provider, the Department of Parliamentary Services, the section supports and enables the work of the House of Representatives, its committees, and the department by providing a range of information services and content to internal and external stakeholders. The section develops and implements strategies underpinning the department's community outreach role in promoting the work of the House of Representatives and its committees to the public through organised events, such as the My First Speech competition, and through social media and other channels, records management, business systems and websites. The section is also responsible for the in-house design and production of print, video and web resources. Table Office [PSL3 to EB2] The Table Office is responsible for providing procedural advice and administrative services to support the operations of the House of Representatives, Federation Chamber and some domestic committees. The Table Office provides advice and support to the Speaker, ministers, members and their staff, the department's executive and staff on procedural and chamber-related administrative matters. It also publishes certain chamber documents and processes and makes available legislation and documents presented in the House and Federation Chamber as well as contributing to training for departmental staff and parliamentary outreach services International and Parliamentary Relations Office [PSL4 to EB2] The International and Parliamentary Relations Office (IPRO) supports the Parliament's international program, focusing on strengthening engagement and cooperation with parliaments internationally. IPRO is overseen by the Clerk Assistant Table and coordinates incoming and outgoing delegation visits, manages passports and visas for parliamentarians, supports parliamentary strengthening activities and coordinates the Parliament's participation in international parliamentary associations Serjeant-at-Arms' Office [PSL2 to EB2] The Serjeant-at-Arms' Office provides services that directly support the House of Representatives chambers, the Speaker, Members of Parliament, and the department and its executive. The Office provides chamber support services, as well as advice and services in relation to office accommodation in Parliament House, security policies and processes, mail delivery, booking services including for meeting rooms, building maintenance, business continuity planning, transport, and the application of the rules for media-related activities in Parliament House. The Office also has a key role in ceremonial duties associated with the House of Representatives and the Parliament. People Strategies Office [PSL4 to EB2] The People Strategies Office is responsible for providing efficient and effective human resources advice and services to support the Department of the House of Representatives. The Office has a strong service focus, providing responsive and efficient services to staff, including payroll services for departmental staff and Members of Parliament, and providing proactive and strategic advice to managers and the Executive to help achieve organisational goals. Finance Office [PSL6 to EB2] The Finance Office supports the work of the House of Representatives and its Committees through the provision of financial services and resource management guidance. By working collaboratively with business areas, the office manages internal and external budgetary requirements along with statutory and management financial reporting. The team delivers financial processing services, flexible financial information and procurement advice to assist internal stakeholders deliver outcomes. Clerk's Office [PSL5] The Clerk's Office supports the Clerk and Deputy Clerk of the House of Representatives, who are the two most senior officials of the department. The Clerk's Office coordinates a range of departmental activities and processes and provides high level support to the Clerk, Deputy Clerk, and the departmental Executive as a group, in their respective management and chamber support roles.
