Olive Pink Botanic Garden
Olive Pink Botanic Garden (OPBG) is a unique, not-for-profit arid zone botanic garden located on Arrernte Country in Alice Springs.
Founded in **** by anthropologist and activist Olive Muriel Pink, the Garden is home to over 600 Central Australian plant species and plays a crucial role in conservation, education, and community well-being.
OPBG is both a natural sanctuary and a cultural space, offering visitors a peaceful environment in which to connect with the desert landscape, learn about native flora, and reflect on the profound Aboriginal significance of the site.
Job Role and Responsibilities
Operating with a small team, the Garden requires a highly self-motivated and active Grounds Manager with broad practical skills to develop and maintain the Garden as a centre of horticultural excellence and a valued community resource.
Key responsibilities
Implement planning, design and development of the Garden in conjunction with the General Manager and Board of Trustees
Coordinate grounds and building works and associated contractors
Plan and coordinate propagation, new plantings, the grounds maintenance program, including weed control, and regular plant sales.
Maintain grounds, irrigation systems and other services.
Monitor and maintain security and processes.
Monitor, assist and undertake activities to ensure high levels of visitor satisfaction.
Supervise, mentor and train horticultural staff, including Apprentices and correction personnel
Supervise and coordinate horticultural volunteers
Plan and coordinate OPBG's horticultural programs
Assist the General Manager, at times, with major events and tourism in the garden.
Assume the responsibilities of Acting General Manager in the absence of the General Manager
Maintain the OPBG plant database
Ensure OPBG's horticultural activities comply with botanic garden standards
With the General Manager, develop and deliver training programs in the Garden
Duties as directed by the General Manager from time to time.
Selection Criteria
A relevant Horticulture/ Land Management/Landscape Design qualification or demonstrated successful experience in a field of technical work related to the position.
Proven ability to coordinate staff and activities, and to work as a member of a team.
Sound knowledge of Australian plants and their horticulture.
Good communication skills, interpersonal and organisational skills.
NT Driver's licence or ability to obtain.
First Aid Certificate
Sound skills and experience in plant propagation.
Experience in working with Indigenous groups.
