Research Physicist Position

This position involves performing research and development (R&D) to expand the application and capabilities of PhotonAssay technology, an industrial application of Gamma-Ray Activation Analysis (GAA). The successful candidate will be responsible for developing and maintaining the analysis chain software and providing expert scientific advice to other teams.
The key responsibilities include:
* Defining, scoping, planning, and managing well-defined R&D projects using the Chrysos Stage Gate framework.
* Accountability for the management and timely delivery of their projects.
* Projects may involve multiple participants.
* Typical project duration up to 0.5 FTE year total.
* Ensuring milestones and timelines for active projects are updated weekly, including progress summaries.
* Ensuring project deliverables are fit-for-purpose.
Development and Maintenance of Analysis Chain
* Contributing to the development and maintenance of the analysis chain in the PhotonAssay codebase, including detector, analysis, reporting, and QC software.
* Ensuring code is maintainable and follows software best-practices.
* Ensuring that changes that alter analytical performance are adequately specified, tested, and understood. Managing changes with stakeholders where necessary.
* Recording, tracking, and fixing defects in a timely fashion, especially those impacting customer results.
New Analytical Services and Capabilities
* Identifying suitable nuclear reactions.
* Performing Monte Carlo simulations.
* Designing and conducting experiments.
* Designing detectors and electronics.
* Building and testing hardware prototypes.
* Analyzing and interpreting data.
Scientific Knowledge and Support
* Developing working knowledge of the PhotonAssay technique and associated science.
Documentation and Publication
* Assisting in preparing manuals, white papers, and other technical materials as required.
* Assisting in preparing scientific reports, publications, presentations, and brochures as required.
Essential Qualifications
* A tertiary qualification in physics or a closely related discipline.
* Experience in leading research and development projects.
* Demonstrated expertise in scientific programming and data analysis.
* Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including preparation of technical documentation and reports.
* Problem-solving, analytical, and organisational skills.
* Demonstrated capability to work effectively within a global business and across diverse cultures.
Desirable
* Research experience in one or more of the following fields:
o Activation or X-Ray Fluorescence (XRF) analysis.
o Nuclear physics.
o Particle accelerators and instrumentation.
o X-ray or gamma-ray spectroscopy.
o Radiation detection.
* A postgraduate qualification in a relevant subject, or at least 5 years' experience working in a relevant field.
* Adept at writing scientific software using Python.
* Willing and able to travel to remote locations in Australia and overseas.
* Attention to detail and highly organised.
* Effective project management skills.
* Strong interpersonal skills, including collaboration with people from different technical disciplines.
