Job Overview – Estimator / Engineering Technologist
The role involves preparing detailed cost estimates, analysing technical drawings, and coordinating with clients, engineers, and suppliers. It includes developing WBS, reviewing quotations, supporting contract negotiations, and assisting in project execution. The position also focuses on improving estimating processes and ensuring accurate tender submissions for engineering and fabrication projects.
Key Job Duties:
* Establish and maintain a network of local suppliers and subcontractors; compile detailed scopes of work, tender packages and request quotations for input into estimates and proposals.
* Develop
Work Breakdown Structures (WBS) in accordance with client and project requirements and assist the Project Controls team to create resource-loaded schedules that reflect the cost estimates.
* Liaise with clients, engineers, architects, builders and other stakeholders to seek further information, clarify technical requirements, resolve discrepancies and respond to Requests for Information (RFIs).
* Review and vet subcontractor and supplier quotations; assist with negotiation and award of sub-contracts, supply agreements and purchase orders.
* Revise estimates and implement required changes based on updated information or client feedback.
* Assist in project management of live projects where required, including scheduling of workload and resources and ordering of materials.
* Attend project handover meetings from the Proposals/Estimating team to the Operations team to ensure smooth implementation.
* Attend project close-out meetings to analyse actual financial and technical performance against estimates; identify opportunities for improvement and update future estimating methodologies and processes based on findings.
* Identify and implement opportunities for technical and process improvement in estimating practices, tendering and overall project delivery.
* Prepare accurate take-offs, cost estimates, pricing schedules and proposals for industrial storage tanks, piping systems, structural steel and mechanical fabrication projects.
* Participate in pre-bid and post-bid meetings to analyse client requirements and project specifications for accurate tender development.
* Identify, interpret and analyse complex customer requirements, including structural, architectural and fabrication drawings, to support quantity take-offs and confirm scope for bid purposes.
* Coordinate multidisciplinary internal resources (Engineering, Operations, Workshop, Commercial and Finance teams) to prepare and submit complete tender responses by the closing date.
Skills & Experience Required
* Proven experience in cost estimation, tender preparation, and pricing for engineering or construction projects.
* Ability to interpret technical drawings, specifications, and project documentation accurately.
* Strong knowledge of
Work Breakdown Structures (WBS) and project scheduling principles.
* Experience in liaising with clients, engineers, subcontractors, and suppliers.
* Competence in reviewing and negotiating subcontractor and supplier quotations.
* Understanding of project management processes, including resource planning and material coordination.
* Strong analytical and problem-solving skills to assess project requirements and cost variations.
* Excellent communication and coordination skills to manage multidisciplinary teams and meet tender deadlines.
