BCET Mechanical Fitter & Maintenance Coordinator

We are seeking a qualified and experienced Mechanical Fitter who also has demonstrated skills as a Maintenance Coordinator to join our Burnie Chip Export Terminal (BCET) team based at our Burnie port in a permanent full-time position.

The purpose of the BCET Mechanical Fitter & Maintenance Coordinator role is to ensure the safe, efficient, and environmentally responsible operation of mechanical systems at BCET. This dual-role position supports both hands-on mechanical maintenance and the coordination of maintenance planning and execution, contributing to the reliable stockpiling and ship loading of woodchips for export.

Responsibilities

- Mechanical Fitter
- Participate in a work environment to ensure effective ship loading and stock piling operations within a 24x7 operation.
- Proactively apply sound maintenance management practices and engage in maintenance activities and improvements to ensure reliable and efficient plant operation.
- Assist with clearing of conveyor system blockages and reset conveyors.
- Daily checks of all fixed plant and reporting of any plant defects and carry out repairs as required.
- During ship loading events, be on standby for emergency mechanical call outs to the facility.

- Maintenance Coordinator

- Support BCET Leadership Team with maintenance planning.
- Prioritise work orders and produce accurate work plans for maintenance requirements allowing effective scheduling and completion of planned work activities.
- Develop, implement, and execute shutdown plans and major maintenance works for the BCET fixed plant and ship loader.
- Procurement of parts, equipment and resources, in consultation with the supervisor, to ensure safe and reliable completion of operations and maintenance work activities.
- Ensure statutory inspections and preventative maintenance programs are completed according to regulatory requirements and asset strategies.

What you can bring

- Proven experience as a qualified mechanical fitter, with strong diagnostic and repair skills across mechanical, hydraulic, and pneumatic systems.
- Demonstrated ability to plan, schedule, and coordinate preventative and corrective maintenance activities using a computerised Asset Management System.
- Ability to manage contractors and external service providers, ensuring compliance with safety, quality, and operational standards.
- Strong analytical and troubleshooting skills with the ability to respond effectively to unplanned breakdowns and operational challenges.
- In-depth understanding of WHS legislation, risk management practices, and statutory maintenance requirements relevant to industrial operations.
- Excellent communication skills with the ability to work collaboratively across teams, liaise with stakeholders, and maintain positive working relationships.
- Self-motivated with the ability to work independently, manage competing priorities, and adapt to changing operational demands.

Qualifications

- Ability to acquire and maintain a current Maritime Security Identification Card
- Provide First Aid
- Trained and competent for working in confined spaces
- Work safely at heights
- Tasmanian construction industry induction (White Card)
- Tasmanian High Risk Work Licence with competencies in: Trained and competent to issue Permit to Work / Work Permits
