The Position
Under the supervision of a Learning Adviser, Writing Coaches work as part of a team that supports students' high-level academic skill development. This position requires experience in teaching, tutoring and / or mentoring, an understanding of the higher education context and experience working with students from diverse backgrounds. Writing Coaches provide one-to-one sessions with students, offering specific advice, feedback and strategies to assist them with their studies, with a focus on, but not limited to, academic writing skills. These sessions will take place face to face, via Zoom or asynchronously via Wattle. There is also scope in this role to promote our Academic Skills service within courses and present academic skills sessions within Residential Halls.
The Person
A Writing Coach advises individual students from all disciplines, including those from diverse backgrounds and at different stages of their educational lifecycle, and assists them to gain strategies and skills that enable the further development of their independent learning. They deliver student-centred, multi-modal appointments that meet, and are responsive to, the academic learning needs of each student and maintain regular, productive communication with team members, supervisors and administrators. Writing Coaches may undertake other duties consistent with and relevant to the classification of the position, such as contributing to promotional and printed collateral, promoting the service to large groups, and presenting academic skills teaching to small groups. Writing Coaches must comply with all ANU policies and procedures and in particular those relating to work health and safety and equal prospect.
