About the ROLE: Practice Lead Data & AI
* Location: Sydney
* Permanent Full‐time Role
The Practice Lead Data & AI (Artificial Intelligence) will shape, build, and enable the delivery of nxzen's Data and Artificial Intelligence proposition, with a primary focus on leveraging AI for Asset Intelligence and Operational Excellence. The role targets Utilities in Australia generally, with a particular emphasis on Australian Electricity Distribution Networks.
This role reports to the Digital CoE (Centre of Excellence) Head and collaborates closely with colleagues in the wider nxzen group. Including but not limited to other CoE teams, Client Partners, other group companies, etc. The role is both market‐facing and works internally to build our capabilities in applying Artificial Intelligence to drive smarter asset management, predictive analytics, Operational Excellence, and performance improvement across utilities in Australia, with a particular focus on electricity distribution networks.
Key responsibilities for the role include:
* Define and execute the Data & AI (Artificial Intelligence) strategy for Asset Intelligence and Operational Excellence, aligned to nxzen's business objectives and the needs of Australian utility clients.
* Identify and prioritise opportunities to expand nxzen's footprint across Australian Electricity Distribution Networks and the broader utilities sector.
* Work with Client Partners, clients, and NNNCo to develop go‐to‐market solutions and bids that combine AI‐driven analytics, IoT, and asset performance improvement.
* Develop compelling value propositions that demonstrate how Artificial Intelligence can enhance asset intelligence, operational efficiency, and network resilience for electricity distribution businesses.
Client & Stakeholder Engagement
* Act as a senior point of contact for key utility clients, particularly Australian Electricity Distribution Networks, building trusted relationships with operations, digital, and engineering leaders.
* Support Client Partners and Delivery Directors in shaping client transformation journeys that leverage AI for asset intelligence and operational excellence outcomes.
* Represent nxzen externally at industry events, contributing to thought leadership and brand positioning in the Australian utilities and energy sector.
Service & Solution Development
* Shape the Data & AI product and service roadmap, ensuring solutions are technically robust, scalable, and commercially competitive for the Australian electricity distribution market.
* Drive the development of AI‐powered solutions for asset health monitoring, predictive maintenance, risk assessment, network optimisation, and operational decision‐making.
* Maintain awareness of emerging technologies and trends (AI/ML, generative AI, IoT, 5G, edge computing, OT security, digital twins) and translate these into practical solutions for utility clients.
Programme Delivery Oversight
* Oversee successful delivery of Data & AI programmes for utility clients, ensuring outcomes are met on quality, cost, and schedule.
* Implement strong governance, assurance, and performance metrics across projects, with particular attention to the regulatory and compliance environment of Australian electricity distribution.
* Ensure operational compliance with security, safety, and regulatory requirements applicable to Australian utility networks.
About YOU
* Extensive experience in Data & Artificial Intelligence, with a demonstrated ability to apply AI/ML techniques to asset intelligence and operational excellence in utility or infrastructure environments.
* Deep understanding of Australian Electricity Distribution Networks, including regulatory frameworks (AER), network management challenges, and asset lifecycle management.
* Proven ability to operate across IT, OT, and ET environments, integrating diverse systems to drive digital transformation and enhance asset performance using AI.
* Hands‐on experience managing, analysing, and deriving insights from IoT devices, OT systems, digital twins, simulation platforms, and asset health models (e.g., NARMS, CNAIM).
* Demonstrated track record of leveraging AI and integrated data to inform asset performance improvement, risk assessment, and strategic decision‐making.
* Extensive experience applying IEC CIM, ISO 14224, and Ops 4.0 frameworks to support AI‐driven asset intelligence and operational excellence initiatives.
* Skilled in collaborating with cross‐functional teams and stakeholders to design and deliver technically robust, scalable, and commercially viable AI‐powered asset intelligence solutions.
* Bachelor's degree in engineering, Computer Science, Data Science, Information Technology, or a related discipline.
* Experience selling or delivering AI and data solutions to Australian electricity distribution businesses (e.g., Ausgrid, Endeavour Energy, Essential Energy, AusNet, Powercor, SA Power Networks, Energex, Ergon Energy, Western Power, or similar).
* Familiarity with Australian energy market structures, the National Electricity Rules, and the regulatory investment test (RIT‐D) processes.
* Experience with AI/ML platforms and tools commonly used in utility asset management and operational analytics.
* Track record of building and leading high‐performing teams in a consulting or professional services environment.
* Professional certifications in Data & AI, IoT, or Analytics (e.g., Certified Data Scientist, AI/ML certifications, or Analytics Professional certifications).
* ISO 55000 / Asset Management certification.
* IEC CIM or related utility data modelling standards.
* OT / Cybersecurity certifications (e.g., CISSP, CISA, or relevant OT security training).
