Would you like to help someone new to Australia learn English?Want to make a positive impact in the life of a migrant or refugee?Do you have an hour free each week to support a student through a term of study?Learning English is the most important factor in helping new migrants and refugees settle in Australia. You could make a difference to someone by volunteering from one hour a week with our Adult Migrant English Program students. What you can offerVolunteer tutors provide an invaluable source of learning for students, helping them learn practical English skills for day-to-day activities such as banking, shopping, filling out forms, making and attending medical appointments and participating in their new community. Tutors help advanced students focus on their preparation for work or further education. Most volunteer tutors speak English during their sessions, however there is also a need for bilingual support. A familiarity with a shared language can provide an extra level of support in a student’s settlement journey.Flexible hours and locationStudents may request a volunteer tutor over face-to-face classes because they are elderly, pregnant, caring for a family member, working full-time or part-time, or because they live in a remote area.We are currently looking for volunteers to work one-on-one with our students. While tutors and students normally meet in the classroom or at the student's house, you can choose other venues such as shopping centres, cafes, libraries or even online. Times are flexible too - you can tutor whenever it’s mutually convenient for you both - during the week, after hours, or on the weekend. No experience necessary : all training providedYou don’t need to be a teacher or have previous experience in tutoring to volunteer - all training is provided. We have several online and face-to-face training sessions scheduled, please submit your expression of interest and our Volunteer Tutor Coordinator will get in contact with you.CommitmentRegular - less than 6 monthsTrainingProvided by TAFE QueenslandTime requiredMinimum of 1 hour per week (during term) for up to 1 termRequirementsNational Police CertificateOthersYou must meet the following criteria to be eligible :Be aged 18 or over and legally entitled to work in AustraliaBe proficient in written and spoken EnglishPass a criminal history checkBe prepared to complete the free volunteer tutor training course with TAFE QueenslandBe able to commit to a minimum of one hour per week for up to 1 term
