Ports North is responsible for the development and management of port facilities vital to the economic growth of Cairns and regional centres in Far North Queensland. Ports North has extensive property, marina, tourism and cargo facilities in Cairns and across nine regional and remote ports.
The Opportunity
The General Manager Commercial is a key leadership position in Ports North and this role is responsible for the overall development and management of Ports North's commercial interests. As a result of the diverse business activities undertaken by Ports North, areas of commercial opportunity include a significant focus on property and trade development as well as stakeholder and customer management.
As a member of the senior leadership team the General Manager Commercial will lead the development of commercial strategies in consultation with the Chief Executive Officer and senior management team to ensure corporate objectives are effectively achieved. This role is central to identifying and securing new business opportunities, shaping major commercial partnerships, and ensuring sustainable commercial development aligned with Port Masterplans and Land Use Plans.
Externally the General Manager Commercial represents and promotes the organisation within business forums, regional industry and economic development bodies, government and the local community.
Key Responsibilities:
* Lead the overall development and management of Ports North's commercial interests.
* Drive property and trade development, including stakeholder and customer management.
* Lead the development of commercial strategies in consultation with the Chief Executive Officer and senior management team to ensure corporate objectives are achieved.
* Lead the development and management of commercial interests by identifying and securing new business opportunities and commercial leases to improve financial performance.
* Develop strategy and lead negotiations for major commercial deals, property developments, and partnerships with existing and potential customers.
* Deliver sustainable commercial development aligned to Port Masterplans and Land Use Plans, including acquisition of commercial property in line with Ports North's Land Acquisition and Protection Strategy.
* Develop and maintain positive relationships with key customers, stakeholders, government departments, business interests, and community groups.
* Contribute as a member of the Executive Leadership Team (ELT) to organisational performance, providing professional input and upholding expected leadership standards.
* Lead, manage, and mentor the Commercial Team to meet current and future portfolio needs.
* Lead or contribute to strategic and operational projects as required.
* Represent and promote the organisation in business forums, industry bodies, government, and the community.
About You:
You are a seasoned commercial executive with a strong background in business development, commercial strategy and complex negotiations. You bring experience leading commercial property, infrastructure or major project portfolios, ideally within a regulated or multistakeholder environment.
You will also demonstrate:
Proven track record in developing and driving corporate commercial strategy achieving superior commercial outcomes and generating business growth.
Strong commercial property background in property valuation, property management and commercial property development with experience in rent review negotiations, lease structure to drive commercial returns and developing commercial property.
Demonstrated experience in contract development, management and negotiation.
Tertiary qualifications in law, business, commerce, property, or a related discipline.
The ability to operate confidently at senior levels across government, industry and regulatory environments.
Highly developed interpersonal, influencing and stakeholder engagement skills.
Strategic thinking, commercial acumen and the ability to identify innovative business opportunities.
