You're a DevOps Data Engineer who enjoys building reliable, automated platforms that enable meaningful research at scale. You're comfortable working across high‐performance computing (HPC), cloud and on‐prem environments, and you care deeply about making systems secure, repeatable and dependable. You enjoy partnering with researchers and technical teams to translate complex requirements into practical, well‐designed solutions. Most of all, you're motivated by purpose, knowing your work supports world‐leading cardiovascular research that can genuinely change lives.
The role
In this role, you'll design, build and operate secure, scalable infrastructure that supports intensive data processing and computational research across the Institute. Working across hybrid and multi‐cloud environments, you'll enable reproducible research through automation, Infrastructure as Code and modern CI/CD practices. You'll collaborate closely with researchers, data specialists and IT colleagues to deliver high‐performing platforms that are well monitored, well governed and built to last. This is a hands‐on role where your engineering expertise directly enables scientific discovery.
What we will trust you with
* Designing, building and operating reliable hybrid and cloud infrastructure to support data and compute‐intensive research
* Managing and optimising HPC environments (including schedulers such as SLURM) to ensure performance, reliability and reproducibility
* Enabling containerised research workloads using Docker and Kubernetes
* Designing and maintaining secure, reusable CI/CD pipelines for infrastructure and research applications
* Implementing Infrastructure as Code using tools such as Terraform and Ansible to deliver consistent, auditable environments
* Building API‐driven automation and integrations across platforms and services
* Implementing observability, monitoring and reliability practices to support performance and availability
* Embedding security, compliance and data governance into everyday engineering and operational practices
Does this sound like you?
* Demonstrated experience designing and operating HPC environments, including hands‐on use of schedulers such as SLURM
* Strong understanding of core infrastructure services, including networking, DNS and Active Directory
* You've worked with cloud infrastructure in a cloud‐agnostic way, with experience in platforms such as Azure and OCI
* Confident working with container technologies and orchestration tools like Docker and Kubernetes
* You have hands‐on experience with Infrastructure as Code and Git‐based version control
* Ability to design and maintain secure CI/CD pipelines with appropriate testing and release controls
* Comfortable automating operations using scripting languages such as Python, Bash or PowerShell
* You bring an understanding of research or data‐intensive workflows, with an appreciation for security, compliance and data governance
About us
The Victor Chang Cardiac Research Institute (the Institute) is dedicated to finding cures for cardiovascular disease and is one of the most respected heart research facilities in the world. Renowned for the quality of its breakthroughs, the Institute was established in 1994 and has grown to a team of more than 200 researchers from around the globe, working across five divisions.
A global centre‐of‐excellence, it integrates Cardiac Physiology and Transplantation, Developmental and Stem Cell Biology, Molecular Cardiology and Biophysics, Structural and Computational Biology, as well as Vascular Biology. At the Institute, we translate our discoveries into new diagnostics, prevention, and treatment of cardiovascular disease - reducing the incidence, severity, and impact of heart disease.
