Navantia Australia, in partnership with University Technology (UTS) Sydney have create a new arm to what they do: Marintec. Marintec aims to nurture Australia's sovereign capability in the maritime sector through cutting edge research and development in digital technologies.
We have exciting opportunities for a Research and Development (R&D) Engineer to join the team out of its UTS campus office, Sydney. In the role, one supports the design, development, and integration of innovative engineering solutions to enhance platform systems and related naval technologies. The role supports the development of infrastructure and frameworks for the smart sustainment of naval platforms
Your responsibilities will include:
The R&D Engineer – Robotics is responsible for designing, developing, modifying, documenting, testing, implementing, and supporting robotics-related projects. This role places a strong emphasis on field testing and programming development, adhering to industry-standard software engineering practices. It involves moving proof-of-concept innovations and R&D projects to higher technology readiness levels, aligning with the commercialisation goals of Navantia Australia. The projects include developing maritime technologies related to autonomous systems, simulation, and artificial intelligence.
As the ideal candidate, you will have:
Technical:
* Sound knowledge of ROS/ROS2, Python, C++ or similar programming tools
* Knowledge of libraries used in robotics visualisation, path planning and perception
* Sound knowledge of industry standard coding and designing practices
* Experience working in a Linux and docker environment is optional but valued
* Sound knowledge in ICT operations and understanding of Cybersecurity threats and risks
Management:
* Demonstrated ability to manage internal and external relationships.
* Ability to work independently and communicate with stakeholders.
Behavioral:
* Ability to demonstrate practical troubleshooting and problem analysis techniques
* Good attention to detail and ability to show initiative
* Ability to plan and prioritise workload without supervision

Security:
* Ability to gain baseline Clearance as a minimum.
* The employee must also take care of the ongoing management of their security clearance (at level) with the assistance of their Security Officer.

• Any change of circumstances that will affect the clearance holder must be immediately reported to AGSVA via form SVA003 (Change of Circumstances Notification form).
* The employee must adhere to all ongoing security requirements by Navantia Australia and the Commonwealth of Australia (Defence).
Australian Citizenship is required for this position.
PhD Degree qualified or undertaking is preferred for this position, ideally in model predictive control or digital twin technology for complex engineering systems.
