The Humanitarian Assistance and Disaster Relief Institute (HADR Institute) is a small Australian-registered charity and NGO supporting humanitarian and disaster response initiatives across the Indo-Pacific. Our work focuses on principled humanitarian action, localisation, and humanitarian protection in disaster prone and complex environments.
We are seeking a Treasurer to join our Board as a Non-Executive Director and ACNC Responsible Person.
The Role
This is a governance and oversight role, not an operational or bookkeeping position. The Treasurer provides board-level assurance on financial sustainability, compliance, and risk as the organisation continues to develop.
Key Responsibilities
* Provide financial oversight and advice as a Board member
* Review financial reports, cash position, and sustainability risks
* Lead board-level oversight of audits or financial reviews
* Support Board assurance regarding compliance with:
* ACNC
* ATO
* ASIC
* ACFID
* Ensure appropriate financial controls and financial risk awareness are in place
* Escalate material financial or compliance risks to the Board and Executive early
* Support development of revenue sources, such as donors, grants and commercial contracts
About You
Essential
* Financial literacy and confidence interpreting financial statements
* Experience with small organisations, charities, or NFP governance
* Sound judgement and a strong governance mindset
* Willingness to act as an ACNC Responsible Person
* Alignment with humanitarian values and ethical practice
* Suitability for directorship, including indicators such as AICD qualifications and prior experience
Desirable
* CPA / CA or equivalent experience
* Prior Treasurer, audit, CFO or board experience
* Familiarity with charity regulation or overseas program risk
* Post graduate and/or professional certifications relevant to the role
You do not need to be an accountant, and this role does not involve day-to-day financial management - however this experience is preferred to support oversight and mentorship of the financial officer.
Time Commitment
Approximately 3–12 hours per month. 3-5 hours for steady state governance. Some additional time during audit and annual reporting periods. Fully remote is viable, however preferred Brisbane to facilitate in person board meetings. Australian citizenship is essential.
