Offer description

Rare hands-on observatory role supporting Australia s space capability | Technical, meaningful, site-based work.

This federal government agency operates specialised scientific infrastructure supporting Australia's national positioning, mapping and space capability.

Working closely with global research organisations, the agency delivers highly precise data used in navigation systems, geospatial services and future technology capability.

This is a technical environment where accuracy, reliability and operational discipline matter.

The Opportunity

This is a genuinely unique technical operations role combining hands-on work, advanced systems and a structured lifestyle roster.

As a Satellite Observer, you will operate specialised satellite laser ranging and geodetic systems that measure satellite positions and ground movement with extreme precision. You will work in a highly specialised observatory environment contributing to systems that underpin mapping, navigation and location-based services used across Australia and globally.

This role is based in the Mid-West region of Western Australia at a remote observatory site. Most staff live within one hour of site in nearby coastal communities, offering a quieter lifestyle with access to beaches and strong work-life balance.

Roles like this are rare. You will work directly with satellite systems, advanced lasers and nationally significant infrastructure while earning a strong shift-based package.

If you want something more meaningful and technically interesting than a standard operations role, this stands out.

The Role

You will be responsible for operating and monitoring observatory systems during shift, ensuring accurate data capture and maintaining system performance.

This is not a standard operator role. It requires technical thinking, attention to detail and the ability to troubleshoot issues in real time.

Key responsibilities include:

* Operating satellite laser ranging equipment and observatory systems
* Monitoring system performance and data capture during shifts
* Conducting equipment checks, testing and basic maintenance
* Troubleshooting faults across electronic and technical systems
* Maintaining operational logs and daily reporting
* Managing shift handovers and communicate issues clearly
* Liaising with technical stakeholders and support teams

The role operates on a 4 days on / 4 days off roster, working 12-hour shifts on a rotating AM/PM pattern. Typical shift times are 3:00am to 3:00pm and 3:00pm to 3:00am. A vehicle is provided during rostered periods and shared across the team.

This role is fully site-based while on shift. This is not FIFO or Perth-based. Relocation is required.

The Ideal Person

You are technically minded, reliable and comfortable working in a structured shift environment.

You bring:

* Strong technical aptitude and problem-solving ability
* Fault-finding capability across systems or equipment
* Ability to work independently during shifts
* Reliability and accountability in a critical environment
* Clear communication and attention to detail

You're likely to come from a background of:

* Electronics Technician
* Instrument Technician
* Control Room Operator
* Mining or Plant Operator
* Defence technical roles

Australian Citizenship is essential with Baseline Clearance or Ability and maintain one.

Experience in any of the below would be highly regarded:

* Electronics maintenance experience
* Circuit fault finding
* Linux exposure
* Optics or laser systems
* Shift-based operations experience
Salary / Rate
* $120k – $130k + Super | 4 On / 4 Off Roster (12 hour shifts)
