The Opportunity
The Operational Engineering (OE) Branch comprises of high-performing, dynamic, multidisciplinary teams committed to enabling ASD’s missions in unique and exciting ways. Our people are highly skilled and work at the forefront of innovation to support mission requirements through their specialist skills in mechanical design, prototyping and operation of manufacturing capabilities.Machinists, Fitter and Turners, Toolmakers and Technologists work in integrated teams responsible for tackling complex and unusual problems to protect Australia and its national interests. These positions are part of a close knit team that is involved in end-to-end capability development, with responsibility for engineering development from conceptual designs right through to end product delivery. We build unique products using state of the art technologies, techniques and systems in the mechanical domain. The breadth of the teams’ work program provides the opportunity to be exposed to the full product life cycle and see the results of their work.
Key Duties:
Develop bespoke mechanically engineered solutions and products to support ASDs most critical missions using a variety of engineering software packages and modern manufacturing capabilities.Design, manufacture, test and integrate bespoke mechanical/electrical systems and sub systems.Participate in technical reviews and quality assurance activities to maintain the security and integrity of production capabilities.Undertake research and development looking for innovative ways to solve problems and achieve outcomes.Collaborate and share knowledge with teams across the National Intelligence Community and with international partners.

The occupants of these positions play a pivotal role in the design, development and delivery of critical capabilities used by ASD’s workforce, ensuring they are fit-for-purpose to meet sensitive and time-critical mission requirements. An ideal candidate will also have:
A qualification as a Machinist, Fitter and Turner, Toolmaker or Technologist from an approved institution; alternatively related trades, certifications and relevant experience will also be considered.Ability to work well in a small motivated team environment and contribute to the development and growth of the ASD team.Possess the aptitude and willingness to broaden current skills and experience to aid with the delivery of varying technical products.Exhibit an in-depth understanding of mechanical design principles and manufacturing processes.Competence under broad direction to contribute to end-to-end capability development and delivery with responsibility for engineering development from conceptual designs right through to end product delivery to the customer.
