Mechanical product development engineer

Offer description

Good engineering looks one way in CAD.

Great engineering works in prototype, in testing, in manufacturing and in the finished product.

That's what this NPD Project Engineer role with Chamberlain Group is really about.

You'll be part of a local Somersby engineering team, backed by a global leader in intelligent access.

Think garage door openers, gate operators, commercial access systems and smart connected products used across homes, businesses and commercial environments.

This is not a role where you design one component in isolation and never see what happens next.

You'll stay close to the product, close to the testing, close to manufacturing and close to the decisions that shape how things are actually built.

From concept development and mechanical design through to prototyping, supplier conversations, testing feedback, manufacturing requirements and product improvements, your work will show up in something real.

And that's the good part.

You'll have the structure and backing of a global business, the feel of a close-knit local team, hybrid working, and the chance to work on products you can actually see, touch, test and improve.

Not bad, right?

Opportunities in this team don't come up often, so we're pleased to be recruiting for two roles as the team evolves to meet new challenges

As the NPD Project Engineer, you'll work across new and existing product development, with a strong focus on mechanical and electro-mechanical products.

Some days you'll be developing design concepts, part drawings or prototypes.

Other days, you'll be working through design reviews, testing outcomes, manufacturing constraints, supplier feedback or product changes that need to be solved properly.

There's a genuine project ownership piece here too.

You'll help manage mechanical engineering activity across NPD and sustaining projects, working closely with engineering, manufacturing, marketing, sales, service and external suppliers to turn customer and business needs into practical product outcomes.

It's hands-on, detailed and commercially aware product engineering.

The kind where you don't just ask, "does the design work?"

You also ask, "can we build it, test it, improve it and get it into market properly?"

You'll be helping make sure products meet performance, regulatory, cost, timing and quality requirements, while staying close enough to the work to actually see the impact of your decisions.

Chamberlain Group is a global leader in intelligent access, creating products that make homes, businesses and commercial spaces safer, smarter and easier to access.

Their portfolio spans garage door openers, gate operators, commercial access systems and connected smart technology.

Globally, they're established, innovative and future focused. Locally, the Somersby team gives you the chance to stay close to engineering, manufacturing, testing, operations and the end product.

You'll be joining a business with the backing of a global group, without losing that local team feel.

There's a strong "one team" environment, where engineers work closely with the people building, testing, servicing and improving the products.

So yes, you'll be designing.

But you'll also be seeing what that design does once it leaves the screen.

You're a mechanical, mechatronic or product development engineer who likes working on real products.

You may have come from consumer products, appliances, industrial products, manufacturing, electro-mechanical systems, access control, HVAC, MedTech or another product-based environment.

The exact industry is less important than the way you think.

You understand product development is not just about a clean design file. It's about how a product performs, how it is tested, how it is manufactured and how it holds up once it is in market.

You'll ideally bring experience across NPD, mechanical design, CAD, prototyping, suppliers, manufacturing and testing.

SolidWorks or Creo experience would be highly regarded.

Most importantly, you're practical, detail-focused and comfortable working across teams to get things moving.

Hit apply with your CV to be directly considered.
