About the Team
The Faculty of Engineering and IT (FEIT) is large and complex with six schools, research centres, engineering laboratories, IT laboratories and a large technical workshop. In 2018, The UTS Tech Lab came online, it is a university research facility encompassing significant engineering and IT laboratories, which has established FEIT as a key research leader. This position will sit within the Mechanical, Mechatronics and Robotics (MMR) Technical Support Cluster and will work closely with the rest of the MMR Team of 11.
About the Role
The Technical Support Assistant (TSA) is responsible for operating and providing training on assigned laboratory tools and equipment. The TSA will support and assist undergraduate and postgraduate students as well as academic staff in the use of laboratory facilities. The MMR team supports mechanical and mechatronic labs and equipment. This role will focus largely on supporting coursework in mechanical teaching workshops where students complete projects using equipment such as hand tools, drill presses, sheet metal and laser cutters.
If successful in applying for this role, you will be responsible for:
• Supporting practical classes with the MMR team under the direction of academic staff, including providing demonstrations on how to use manufacturing and mechatronic equipment, explaining techniques, and supporting students with their laboratory and workshop activities.
• Assist academic and technical staff in supporting training on tools and equipment, supporting teaching labs, and supporting research activities.
• Perform routine equipment maintenance including; equipment calibration, replacing damaged components, and maintaining the cleanliness of equipment.
• Ensure students and research staff adhere to relevant induction procedures and have completed sufficient training and supervision before using complex equipment.
• Uphold a culture of safety amongst the technical support cluster, providing sound guidance to colleagues and other lab users in regard to health and safety practices.
With examples, please outline within your Cover Letter, how you meet the following key selection criteria:
• Demonstrated qualification or experience working practically with mechanical or manufacturing/fabrication equipment. An Engineering Cert III or similar in fitting and machining, toolmaking or mechanical engineering degree would be preferable.
• Ability and willingness to proactively develop skills and competencies over a range of technical areas and actively apply these skills.
• Ability to train staff and students in the application and use of equipment and evaluate methods and experiments, including on new technology.
• Demonstrated experience working with engineering drawings as well as rough sketches and provide advice on good design practices.
Remuneration & Benefits
Base Salary Range: $83,906 - $95,989 pa (HEW 5)
This role attracts 17% superannuation (pension) in addition to the base salary.

This position is full-time, and appointment will be made on a continuing basis.
