About us
Meals on Wheels Tasmania began serving the community in 1955 and now operates 15 branch locations across the State, from Wynyard in the northwest to the Huon Valley in the south. Each year, our team of more than 50 dedicated staff and over 700 volunteers deliver approximately 300,000 meals to older Tasmanians and people with living with disabilities, helping them maintain their independence and continue living safely in their own homes.
About the role
Meals on Wheels Tasmania is seeking a skilled Finance Manager to lead our finance function and join the MOWTAS Leadership Team.
Reporting to the General Manager, you will hold primary responsibility for financial operations, including accounting, reporting, budgeting, compliance, and risk management. Supported by an Office Allrounder and a Business Trainee, you will mentor and guide your team while ensuring accuracy, efficiency, and compliance with all statutory and organisational requirements.
This role also plays a critical part in advising the General Manager, Board, and Finance & Audit Committee, providing timely financial insights to support effective decision-making and the long-term sustainability of MOWTAS.
Key Responsibilities
* Lead and manage the finance function, providing supervision and mentoring to a small team
* Oversee accounting operations including payroll, accounts payable/receivable, reconciliations and debtor management
* Prepare financial statements, acquittals and management reports in line with statutory and funding body requirements
* Lead annual budgets and forecasting and monitor organisational performance against targets
* Ensure compliance with ACNC, ATO, Fair Work, SCHADS Award and other relevant legislation
* Maintain effective financial risk controls, audits and insurance coverage
* Drive process improvements, strengthen internal controls and enhance system efficiency (e.g. MYOB, Employment Hero)
* Build strong relationships with auditors, banks, funders and key stakeholders
* Present financial insights to the Board and Finance & Audit Committee in a clear and accessible way
About you
The successful candidate in the role will have:
* Proven experience in finance or accounting, ideally with responsibility for managing a finance function.
* Strong technical accounting skills, including preparation of financial statements and knowledge of Australian Accounting Standards.
* Experience in managing grant funding, budgets, forecasts, and cash flow.
* Proficiency in finance systems (e.g., MYOB, Employment Hero, Microsoft Office) with the ability to improve processes and strengthen controls.
* Leadership and supervisory experience, with the ability to mentor and develop a small team.
* Strong communication skills, including the ability to explain financial information to non-financial stakeholders.
* Experience in the not-for-profit sector (desirable) with knowledge of ACNC and charity legislation.
* Analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to identify risks and make sound decisions.
