Position: Painter (Carriage / Site) - Heritage Restoration

About the Don River Railway

The Don River Railway (DRR), operated by The Van Diemen Light Railway Society Inc., is a beloved heritage railway and a premier tourist attraction in Tasmania, dedicated to recreating living railway history. Our Carpentry/Carriage Workshop is crucial for the meticulous restoration of our historic wooden carriages, and our site maintenance team ensures the overall aesthetic appeal of the railway precinct.

The Opportunity

We are seeking skilled and enthusiastic Painters to join our team, focusing on either heritage carriage restoration or general site maintenance. This is a hands‑on role where your painting expertise will directly contribute to the authentic appearance of our unique collection of heritage railway carriages and the overall presentation of the Don River Railway site. If you are passionate about applying your trade in a historical context, working with attention to detail, and enhancing the visual appeal of our heritage assets, this is a highly rewarding opportunity. Skilled painting experience is highly desired for this role.

Key Responsibilities & Duties

* Prepare surfaces for painting, including cleaning, sanding, and minor repairs on railway carriages, buildings, or other site structures.
* Apply paint, varnish, and other finishes using appropriate techniques (brush, roller, spray gun).
* Match colours and finishes to historical specifications for heritage restoration projects.
* Maintain painting equipment and ensure proper storage of materials.
* Collaborate with carpenters, handymen/women, and other site maintenance volunteers.
* Adhere strictly to all DRR safety procedures and workshop/site guidelines, including proper use of PPE.
* Contribute to a positive and collaborative workshop or site environment.

Anticipated Impact & Why Volunteer with Us

* Directly preserve Tasmanian railway heritage: Your skills will bring historic rail vehicles back to their authentic glory and maintain the historical aesthetic of our site.
* Enhance visitor experience: A well‑maintained and visually appealing site significantly improves the experience for our thousands of visitors.
* Apply your trade in a unique setting: Work on historically significant projects that offer unique challenges and immense satisfaction beyond typical painting jobs.
* Be part of a passionate community: Join a team of dedicated volunteers and enthusiasts who share a love for railways and a commitment to DRR's mission.
* Support DRR's future: Your efforts contribute directly to the authenticity and appeal of our operational fleet and museum, enhancing our growth as a premier tourist attraction.
