Community-based Regional Forensic Mental Health Services:
Currently, Forensicare's community services are based in metropolitan Melbourne and have limited ability to provide face-to-face services to people and service providers in regional areas. Rapid growth in demand for Forensicare's services, coupled with the significant ongoing strain on bed capacity at Thomas Embling Hospital, has heightened the need to expand and improve our community-based services, including through the establishment of new services in regional Victoria.
The regional forensic mental health teams are 'spokes' to Forensicare's central community forensic mental health services (CFMHS) 'hub'. A multidisciplinary team consisting of medical, nursing and allied health (psychology, social work, occupational therapy) clinicians, a peer worker, and a manager and administration officer will provide services targeted to people aged 18 and over who are:
* at risk of offending or who are currently exhibiting offending behaviours, including violence and aggression in AMHWS inpatient and other settings
* exiting Thomas Embling Hospital or prisons
* presenting to courts, or on court-based orders such as non-custodial supervision orders.
Services offered by the regional teams will include:
* Case management and shared care
* Coordination, supervision, and support
* Forensic therapeutic interventions
* Consultation and reports
Position Objective:
The regional teams provide an opportunity to embed Forensicare's model of care in practice. In recruiting staff for the regional team, we will give priority to candidates who have the skills and personal attributes to work in collaborative, recovery-oriented practice with consumers, their families, carers and supporters, and other service providers.
Clinicians will receive ongoing training in the application of the model of care and techniques for addressing difficult issues, including managing violence risks. Strong attention to physical and emotional safety will be reflected in the selection and development of staff and through appropriate matching of consumers to service offerings and modalities.
The regional teams' practice will be guided by the following principles:
* Person-centered, with individualized assessment, care planning and matching of consumers to the right services and supports;
* Recovery oriented and fostering of the natural supports and strengths of consumers and their families, carers, and supporters;
* Family sensitive, strengthening, where possible, consumers' connections with their families, carers, and supporters while minimizing risks to the latter;
* Trauma-informed and cognisant that recovery from the effects of traumatic experiences occurs through human relationships. Team members will make every effort to form positive relationships with consumers and to strengthen their connections with prosocial peers and supportive people, groups, and services in the community;
* Culturally safe and appropriate for First Nations communities, people from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds, people with a disability, women and people with diverse sexualities and genders;
* Holistic the regional teams will develop links with other services and leverage existing resources across health and social services to respond to the holistic needs of consumers and their families and carers; and
* Provided in collaboration with lived experience representatives, including in service implementation, monitoring, and evaluation.
