JOB SUMMARY
Provide counseling and guidance services to students; make referrals to community resources, support groups, and social service agencies as appropriate.
QUALIFICATIONS
* Valid Pennsylvania Education Specialist certification.
* Compliance with Employment Eligibility through Criminal History Records, Pre‐Employment Drug Testing, and Physical Examination/TB Test Standard.
* Maintain compliance with all Pennsylvania certification requirements.
* Maintain a high level of confidentiality.
* Proficiency in the English language, with strong oral and written communication skills.
* Ability to deal courteously and tactfully with students, staff, and the public.
* Knowledge of technology, including software and computerized office equipment.
* Ability to analyze situations accurately and adapt an effective course of action.
* Ability to read, interpret, apply, and explain rules, regulations, policies, and procedures.
* Valid driver's license.
* Knowledge of:
o Effective personal and academic counseling techniques, procedures, theory, and ethics.
o Normal and abnormal child behavior and development, behavior modification techniques and strategies.
o Student assistance programs and community referral resources.
o Principles of training and providing work direction and guidance.
o Diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, disability, and ethnic backgrounds of students.
o Data analysis, targeting instruction, and intervention services.
o Record‐keeping and report preparation techniques.
o Applicable laws, codes, regulations, policies, and procedures.
o Current trends and research concerning the growth and development of children.
PRIMARY JOB FUNCTIONS
* Provide individual and group guidance counseling to students; confer as needed with parents, teachers, and others regarding student needs including school achievement and behavior; prepare records and reports, referrals, and letters.
* Provide crisis counseling services as needed; refer students to social service and governmental agencies, support groups, and other community resources; consult with law enforcement agencies regarding students as necessary.
* Analyze, organize, and interpret school and individualized student data using diagnostic and assessment testing procedures as appropriate.
* Assist administration in producing an effective student body management plan; participate in conferences related to student conflicts; attend student study team meetings.
* Assist students in the development of self‐discipline, responsibility, and leadership skills.
* Adhere to the Pennsylvania Professional Standards and Practices Commission Code of Conduct.
* Change class schedules when necessary for appropriate placement.
* Attend and participate in a variety of meetings, including attendance review and individualized education program (IEP) meetings; provide information concerning student progress; collaborate with other personnel in the development and implementation of IEP goals and objectives; may serve as LEA representative.
* Serve as liaison to other agencies, students, school personnel, families, and community organizations; maintain relations between the school, the community, and community services.
* Assist students in acquiring knowledge and skills that will help them in their personal and social development; identify pupil needs and cooperate with other professional staff members in assessing and solving health, emotional, social, and learning problems.
* Maintain regular and timely attendance.
HIGH SCHOOL COUNSELORS ONLY
* Provide career and post‐secondary counseling; assist students with decision‐making regarding future personal and educational plans; review student transcripts for four‐year planning.
* Provide guidance and advisement to students regarding class selections and promotion requirements.
* Assist students in learning about trade and technical school, apprenticeship programs, and military organizations; inform students of various skill‐training programs available.
* Review and evaluate transcripts received from other schools to determine allowable credits.
SECONDARY JOB FUNCTIONS
* Maintain professional competence through staff development activities and/or self‐selected professional growth activities.
* Administer to the health needs of students, as needed.
* Supervise pupils in out‐of‐classroom activities during the assigned work day.
* Participate in meetings, conferences, and in‐services as assigned.
* Perform related duties as assigned.
