Royal Hobart Hospital is Tasmania's largest hospital, and the Specialised Medical Orderlies provide a valuable service as support staff to a large multidisciplinary clinical team. In 2025, the Medical Orderly Department expanded its service to also support the Repatriation Centre site. As a major clinical teaching and research centre, RHH works closely with the University of Tasmania and other institutions. All services work closely together to focus on delivering excellence in healthcare to achieve improved outcomes for our consumers, workforce and the Tasmanian community.
Role
In accordance with Agency policies and procedures, and infection control and quality improvement guidelines, the Specialised Medical Orderly will:
* Provide Medical Orderly services and assistance to Medical, Nursing, and Para-Medical staff in the lifting, positioning and general care of patients, in a variety of operational areas within the RHH.
* Transport patients within the hospital environment by means of wheelchair, trolleys and beds.
* Respond to emergencies within the RHH, including the management of aggressive incidents as part of the Code Black Response Team.
* As directed, conduct internal hospital security functions.
Required Skills and Experience
* Demonstrated knowledge of manual handling techniques, following Work Health and Safety principles, including safely lifting and positioning spinal patients and caring for acute care patients.
* Knowledge and experience in emergency procedures (Fire, Bomb Threats, Evacuation and Aggression) and understanding of Hospital Code Black Response Team procedures, or the ability to quickly acquire this knowledge.
* Well-developed written and verbal communication skills, together with the ability to prioritise tasks and function as part of a multidisciplinary team, demonstrating tact and diplomacy when interacting with staff, patients and their relatives and friends.

Appointment Details
Fixed term, casual, position working as and when required, commencing as soon as possible for a period of 12 months. Hours to be negotiated with successful applicant.
Applicants should note that, for a period of twelve months from the date of publication, this selection process may be used to fill subsequent or similar casual vacancies.
Salary
$67,193 to $72,126 per annum (pro rata), plus shift loading where applicable. Our Employer 12% superannuation contribution is on top of this amount. Plus 25% Casual Loading - Equivalent of $42.34 to $45.45 per hour. Salary range is in accordance with Public Sector Unions Wages Agreement 2022.
